Sorry, but I for one don't by the whole "addiction is a disease" bullshit. That's a cop-out excuse for people who make very bad choices and cannot muster the strength to correct them. In Whitney's case, she destroyed everything she had - including her life - by her own bad choices. Period. I'm sad that it happened. I'm not sorry for her nor do I feel it's tragic or shocking. In fact, I think it's actually kind of important that people who do bad things to themselves have notoriously bad outcomes now and then. It hopefully helps another generation steer away from following the same path.

As for Whitney and Bobby, I once saw an interview with her where she was asked (essentially - I don't remember the actual quotes) "how did you let Bobby take you from class down into the ghetto?" She basically replied that she was always ghetto, that the public image of her heydey was the real illusion, and all Bobby did was bring out more of her true self. Interesting.

Addiction is a disease, just like depression and other mental health disorders. There are hereditary factors involved, and it can be treated with medication. Bad decisions can cause the disease to manifest though, and bad decisions can cause the issues to continue or relapse. But I firmly believe that it is a disease... and there is plenty of medical evidence out there to back it up.

I've never believed addiction is untreatable and a free voucher for failure, but work with addicts long enough and I think most people's tunes change when they say things like this. I've seen a lot of strength come from some addicts, but humans can only be strong for so long in my opinion. Old habits.

I suppose it depends on what definition of disease you choose to base an opinion on.

One could also say that diabetes is a disease, and focus on people who choose to ignore it's seriousness and eat horrible foods that destroy their bodies. Yes they have a disease, and yes they made bad choices that led to their decline.

Personally, I have not seen anything that can convince me that addiction to, say alcohol or narcotics, can be compared to a disease like diabetes.

But it's my opinion, and it's not really open to being proven right or wrong.

Even I am not that full of myself to realize that my opinion on a subject can't be wrong.

Exactly how does it feel to be right all the time or so self righteous to that you can't accept the possibility that you may learn something new?

Opinions are like assholes.

I normally don't. I always watch anything that you KNOW is going to turn into a tribute show. ;)

I'd agree, but it seems so self serving and hypocritical.

I'd love it if they actually showed pictures of the drugged out Whitney and talked about what their own industry can cause with fame and fortune, but then again, since I didn't watch it, did they address those issues or did they just talk about what a talented lady she was?

I'm sure you already know the answer to THAT. ;) I didn't watch the whole show...but the parts I saw were about how talented she was...and I caught the prayer by LL Cool J.

It has nothing to do with arrogance. It's the definition of opinion vs. fact. Facts can be proven right or wrong, opinions are just that - an opinion only and there is no ability to prove them one way or the other. I never said my opinion could not be changed.

The "opinions are like assholes" line is exactly right, and supports my point.

celebrity deaths always bring out the people that criticize our societies priorities. Someone said he was appalled that people were mourning a drug riddled woman and nobody mourned the 11 soldiers that died yesterday. I'm going to sound heartless but both knew what they were getting themselves into, Whitney when she got into drugs and those soldiers when they signed up for active duty. Both tragic but still...

All death is tragic esp. if its before your time.

as much as I dont want to think drug addiction is a disease
its scientifically proven that it is
its just very complicated to explain
to people who do not want to believe it
yes they make a bad choice and then once they have used to much it becomes very difficult to quit

basically you speed up the functions that you have to make your self happy and burn out your hardware
and to fix it you have to stop doing drugs for a very very long time before your hardware starts to even slowly fix itself if it even can
and all during this time you cannot get pleasure from anything at all no matter what you do cause you phycially cannot use the part of your brain that allows you to feel pleasure
