Re: Rep stuff.

Just wanted to say that I don't think Sam deserves any rep until he changes his deeply offensive avatar. Rep him if you want, but that's just by opinion because I find it offensive!:mad

Re: Rep stuff.

Can't you get into his account and remove it? It's not a very good advert for offtopicz while it's still up there!:(

Yes I can remove it, but we are giving Sam a chance to remove it himself first.

But let me ask you a question, why should it be removed right away without letting him have a say? Every 6th grade history book has a picture of Hitler, should we have them removed? I'm not saying that you or any other member are not offended or that his avatar is out of line, because if something is considered offensive to other members, then it should be looked at and dealt with. But we should give him a chance to remove it himself or we are thinking along the same lines as the guy in the picture.

What about a picture of a pot leaf? There were some members that thought that it was not appropriate. But the overwhelming consensus was that it's just a picture, it's not like it was saying you should smoke it.

I'm just throwing out these questions.... feel free to respond

In fact I threw out that suggestion about Reavers avatar and you were one of the ones who didn't mind it being there.

Re: Rep stuff.

Just goes to show how laid back everyone here is.

So he's got a picture of hitler as an avatar. I don't think he should have to remove it. Freedom of Speech.

Re: Rep stuff.

having a picture of hitler isnt a slander to anyone..its her opinion i she likes or agrees with hitler an avatar that says what you mentioned is an insult and harrasment towards another race openly..and that is not acceptable ..not to mention i doubt we are allowed to have curse words in our avatars :p

Since when is a picture of Hitler slanderous to Jewish people?

I don't agree with what he did, I don't agree with Hitler's values... but it's not saying "fuck jews" in it.

You have no problems with Reavers pot plant Avatar. I've never touched the stuff, I don't even like teh smell, I think it's a waste of money, and I think a lot of problems caused by paranoia would be fixed if potheads would just let go of the stuff.

But I have no problems with you yakking about it, or Reaver having it in his avatar.

Re: Rep stuff.

This avatar debate would make a good topic for the Philosophy and Debate forum, "Freedom of speech: How far is too far?" or some such topic...

Then I could offer my opinion without feeling like I'm chat-jacking someone else's thread...'cause I'm new here and I don't want to step on anyone's toes...

The posts in here are split from the Rep Stuff thread.

Now we can debate the freedom of speech aspect of Sam's Avatar

I want to make it clear that I do not agree with his choice of avatar. I would prefer not to see him (Hitler) at all, let alone in a members avatar or signature. With that being said, I have the power to go and delete it as does every other Super Mod on the site. But is a picture of Hitler offensive enough to warrent one of us to just delete it without at least giving him a chance to explain? If any of you had made questionable or an offensive comment or post, would you like a chance to explain yourself before judgement was passed on you? In all the posts from Sam so far I haven't seen anything that I would consider racist or offensive. Veronica has sent him a PM to see if he would willingly pull it down as not to offend any of the members. Let's give him a day or two to see if he responds.

So what do you all think?

I don't think he's been online yet to see the PM, so I guess give him a chance to remove it.

On one hand, it is offensive. But I suppose so is Reaver's pot leaf... or even my gay cuddle, I guess (I'm fishing for examples). On the other hand, yes we have freedom of speech, and yes that freedom allows us to align our opinions and beliefs with whatever figure we want, Hitler included.

I personally want to see if there is an explanation. Maybe it isn't what we think?

He is from another country I believe. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it may. I guess we will know once he comes back.

question: when is freedom of speech too much?

answer: when that right is trampled by others attempting to exercise their freedom of speech.

---------

personnally - i dont give a fuck. that person should be entitled to use whatever avatar they so choose. its their profile.

its just like life.

(hopefully) you do not tell another person who is of age, and in some cases below that age level, what to do. if you do tell them what to do, you are worse than hitler, because you did not learn from hitler's "mistake", as the outside world sees it. to hitler, it was not a mistake - he genuinely believed what he believed.

if i told you what you believed was wrong, and then forced you to change your beliefs to what i believed, how would that look to the outside world?

that is one major reason why the united states has the problem it has - it tries to bully everyone else into doing what the united states wants, and not letting others decide.
