It's a mystery!

Actually, I think part of the key to a successful thread is asking people something about themselves. People like being given an opportunity to talk about their own experience. Or what colour their pants are :p

That's a good question... invariably, my threads don't go anywhere... but my new thread about the whether has sparked SOME interest... and if it can be perverse...lol I am likely to partake...

Exactly. Give people a chance to share their opinions and their experiences and they'll go on for days lol. This thread will likely have good representation from posters.

Yeah we're all attention whores here.

Also threads which can turn into debates AND offend people who take it too personally get loads of replies. Like that thread on circumcision. Who knew people could get so upset by a little piece of skin.

Also anything about religion seems to get people going or issues that have a strong for and against stance like abortion for example. People will discuss these things to death because they feel passionately about it.

I don't generally respond to many threads simply because I don't feel as though I have something worthwhile to contribute to the conversation. By the time I get to a thread that's interesting to me, someone has more likely than not already said what I was thinking of saying, so there's not much point in reiterating it or giving a what she said smiley. So I just read and go on my way.

I don't post nearly as much as I used to around here. I seem to be a thread killer a lot of the time in my past experiences. :p
