Funny, its the other way around, at least on this forum. All the threads about American football and no one goes in there bashing that sport yet every single thread about football has USA members in it trying to bash it.

actually you and a few other members make it a point to call American football and all other past times in the US "novelty sports" every chance you get

If thats what the discussion is coming too. Usually it's in a thread about football that USA members have felt the need to come into to try and bash, I haven't seen one thread about American football (as it is know in all countries of the world bar one) which has been invaded with football fans trying to bash your sport.

their dental plans

Wait.. they have dental plans? LOL. I've been backpacking in Appalachia in Kentucky and Tenn and they have better teeth than from most Brits I've met.

But the thing I abhor the most about the UK (which for the record I do appreciate as an ally!) is this: Firearms Act of 1997 - TOTAL F'N EPIC FAIL! A travesty aimed to "save" the innocent law-abiding citizens by ripping away their rights to protect themselves. Similarly across the pond, the insane administration is going at ALL angles to rip Americans' rights from them.

I would say, given that our rate of deaths by a gun compared with the USA rate of death by a gun, it's your laws which are the epic failure.

my teeth are fine, thank you for asking, though I know a lot of my countrymen's that aren't ;) :24:

as for the Firearms Act of 1997, what you might find hard to believe is that the people of Britain WILLINGLY gave up the rights to bear arms in favour of a safer society. Which it is. The govt didn't do anything the people didn't want.

You could do well to look into the history of firearms in Britain. There has been very little support for private gun ownership over the past 100 years, we have no pro-gun lobby and care very little for such instruments of death.

Drink the kool aid my friend, the media does a great job of bastardizing facts and wooing the masses to believe that these rights-reducing laws actually protect you - that they're GOOD for you. So...you're telling me that crime in general has been reduced severely after the most atrocious anti-gun law in any "free" nation was passed? I mean it worked well for the Jews too I guess.... . Look Peter, you're free to have your own opinion of course, so believe what you want. I'll hold onto my firearms - you can hold onto your wanker haha.

Here's some facts, which granted, I know it's a conservative-leaning website (much to the reciprocal to most other media outlets) but it's something to look at. It seems that there is not a true official report that compares apples to apples so everything is speculative. If you feel safer not being able to own guns for your protection, go target shooting, hunting, or carry concealed, that's fine. I know many Brits who are not thrilled happy being oppressed... but if it's what you enjoy great. http://wheelgun.blogspot.com/2007/01/crime-in-uk-versus-crime-in-us.html

be honest now, you'd feel stupid wearing a cowboy hat, check shirt, jeans and cowboy boots while sitting on a horse without a gun hanging from your waist wouldn't you?......i bet them pesky injuns are running for the hils as we speak

and by the way,the british with bad teeth thing is a myth

the fact of the matter is that with our gun laws shootings are relatively rare considering the size of the population...we dont get mass drive-bys and gang shoot-outs

Britain generally has a slightly higher crime rate than those in the US. But that has nothing to do with gun ownership. The benefits of us relinquishing our rights to firearms is clear when you compare gun murder rates - the difference is absolutely staggering.

And as for being oppressed, I would say that most Brits enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about a gun killing them or their families. Also I should point out that I've never met a Brit who has either owned a gun or supports gun ownership. Ever. And I know a lot more Brits than yourself.

Personally I appreciate my right to not be shot dead with a gun over my right to play bang bangs but seeing you dont, you just keep drinking your kool aid. I'm very happy with my gun laws thank you, it means I live in a safer country than you.

If you want to kill someone you are gonna to do it with a gun or without. Like Ed signature says "guns don't kill people, but they certainly make the process a whole lot easier."

yes this is true, but if you've not got a gun, the chances of the victim defending themselves successfully becomes far higher.

A friend of mine, for example, had a knife pulled on him in London a few years back. Now he's a kickboxer, and it took a no time at all for him to knock his assailant out cold and take his knife. If the guy had pulled a gun, that most likely wouldn't have been possible.

...and even if you arn't the sort of person to stand and fight with someone weilding a knife, you have a fair chance of not getting hurt if you run away. I would say your chances of outrunning someone pointing a gun at you are poor, to say the least.

I agree with Haus, if somebody wants to kill another person, they're going to do it. Sure a gun may make it easier but lots of people die from knives and other weapons.

Gun control hurts average people more than the criminals. Ed was discussing how the people of Britain gladly turned in their weapons because they wanted a safer country. Oh my, that sounds beautiful. Only thing is, I highly doubt the criminals who own firearms were waiting in line with average Charles six scones to turn over their guns to the authorities.

I think there are more factors to consider when it comes to the United States and gun crime. The UK has one city with over 1 million people. The US has nine cities with over a million people. I think it's safe to assume that violent gun crime is more likely to occur in the inner city where other factors come into play such as poverty, racial tension, drug use, broken homes etc.

Oh, and you Brits seem to have this delusion that everyone in the US carries a gun, the streets are riddled with bullets, and we're all living in fear that we're going to get shot. I can't remember ever hearing a gunshot in my entire life other than when there were hunters around or the shots were planned, such as at a memorial service etc.

See, this is the difference you have to understand between the UK and the USA cultures, there isn't some huge gun culturture here so our laws dont hurt the average person whatsoever as your average Brit has no interest in keeping and shooting guns. The ones that do can still get a license and shoot it legally in a safe place in private as long as they haven't got any history of mental illness or crime.

Sorry, to further answer this, your statistics you quote are misleading because there are far more people living in the USA than Britain and the UK is a far smaller country land wise. I would say there are probably a bigger percentage of UK citizens who are city dwellers than USA citizens. Dont forget the city with a population of over one million is a lot higher than that, larger than every single city in the US, in fact. There are also several cities here which have nearly a million population.
I also dont think everyone in the USA carries a gun but there sure are plenty that do. I can see no good and safe reason why a law abiding citizen needs to carry a gun in public and dont give me the "to protect themself" argument because it's statistically proven that they are more of a danger to innocent people than criminals. More gun deaths in the home in the USA, by legal guns happen by innocent people getting shot than by someone shooting a burglar.

A couple months ago a guy kicked my mothers door in and was greeted by her shot gun. He turned and fled. She didnt fire a single shot, but she did thwart his evil plans. :)

How did she get it out and loaded in such a short time as to have it ready and pointing, the moment a surprise event like someone kicking her door in happened? Dose she keep a loaded gun out and next to her when she's at home? Sounds pretty dangerous and an accident waiting to happen, to me!

London has a population of over one million, but is not larger than every US city. New York City has a population of 8.3 million and London has a population of 7.5 million. Los Angeles and Chicago are quite large as well with a multitude of problems that contribute to violence. Sure USA has a lot more people, but the amount of large cities (over 1 million) in the US compared to Britain is still disproportionate. 1 large city in Britain for 60 million people, 1 large city in the US for only 30 million people.

Sure lots of innocent people may be killed because of accidents involving a gun in the home. However, lots of innocent people die in swimming pools. In fact, more accidental deaths are caused by swimming pools than accidental deaths caused by guns, so should they be outlawed too?

Kyle, it's population density that is the important factor here.
I'd imagine New York and London are of similar population density, and the smaller cities are pretty similar too.
Birmingham has a population over a million, and it's fairly packed from what I remember from my human geography.

US cities, as a rule of thumb, are quite spralling.

And the swimming pool analogy is redundant, unless you could prove that people who suffer accidents in swimming pool accidents have a proprotionally equal fatality and casualty rate to those who suffer gun related accidents.
