So here's the situation. I LOVE my job. I mean it is the only job I have ever had where I look forward to going to work every day. It just feels like a REAL job and not some lame retail or restaurant job like every other job I've ever had. I am really good at what I do also. I learned pretty quickly and my sales are great, and I probably have the top customer service skills among all of the tellers. Here is what sucks though....I am out of balance a LOT. And I don't know why. I would never ever take money from the bank, but sometimes I am just really absent minded about it, and I think I try to be too fast sometimes and just slip up. It may not sound like a huge deal but it is kind of the most important thing at my job, and I often feel like I am going to get fired for it. My worst screw up was on friday...we have a regular who comes in twice or three times a day with large cash deposits, and friday he only had $10,700, but his deposit slip said $10,800. I informed him of this, and he told me that I was wrong. I had one of the lead tellers come recount the money with me, and she got the same thing. The one thing that made him upset I think was that after I initially counted the 20s he gave me i stuck them in my bottom drawer. This was $4200 worth of 20 dollar bills and this is what we are supposed to do because having that much money out on the counter is not a good idea, anyone could reach around and grab it. Anyway, so to appease this guy I told him I could balance my drawer to make sure the money was all there....and herein lies the problem. Somehow, my drawer was $930 short. So I couldn't prove to him that i didn't have his extra $100. I could barely sleep last night because I know I could easily be fired for something like this. Thats the shitty part about working at the bank. They trust you, but when shit like this happens they tend to assume the worst. There was one girl who worked there that was the best teller ever, and always had like the top sales in the whole country, she had worked there for years and was everyone's favorite person...and one day they audited her vault when she wasn't there and she had $10,000 missing out of it. So that's pretty much why they don't trust anyone. So that's my situation...I am just so scared of being fired and I feel like I am kind of stupid to just sit and wait for it, like being caught bent over with your pants around your ankles kind of. So I don't know what to do...if I should be looking for something else...or just wait to be fired. Or maybe I am just too negative..maybe they wont fire me...ug I just dont know.

I wish I could say something to help, but I've never worked in a bank and don't know how they deal with situations like this. I can only guess what I'd do. I know that if I was aware of a weakness in my skills that I'd ask my supervisor if the company had any type training that I could attend that might help me out so that I could figure out what I was doing wrong and improve upon it.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way.

sounds like you rush too much. slow down and you should be alright. also, if you do any type of chit chatting with customers, you may wanna cut down on doing that some because that can screw you up as well.

Aww Clare.

Grace's idea is a good one, you could do that and explain why. get to speak to them, before they come to you. If they do suspect you and you are not speaking to them about the problem, they may well get the wrong idea about you.

The other thing is, that they have CCTV right? You can bet that if they suspect you are stealing money, they will be monitoring the CCTV to see what's what - that way, they will know then that you are not stealing money as it would show on the camera, I would think.

They will know that they can discard that idea then and help you to solve your dilemma to stop yr cash being short. :)

Good luck with it and I hope you manage to get it worked out as to how it keeps happening. :) *hug*

i think grace has a great idea... even if they do not have the training for it per se... at least you have brought it to their attention that you knows its a weakness.. and for nothing else, if a problem arises, you can revert back to the fact that you did ask for extra help/training

Yeah, always the best thing to do, cos I have heard so many times with friends in situations in work that things have happened. The bosses soon went against the truth told to them, just to get rid of someone. :(

Don't feel bad. I am surprised that they have let you stay at this job though. While going to college I worked for Wells Fargo repairing ATM machines on Camp Lejeune. Well during paydays, the machines would always get drained so I had to refill them with money. This particular bank would have the extra cartridges already pre-loaded with money. Some teller marked a 20s containers as 5's so I loaded this supposed 5's container into the 5s slot. I'm sure you can all imagine what happened here. Needless to say, my company was blamed on the nearly $4,000 in losses.

My opinion is that you should look for another job before they fire you, otherwise your going to have a hard time finding another job after getting fired from a bonded position.

You're always on camera though right? Surely if ever someone thought you pocketed money they could see that you didn't.

I really don't have any good advice except maybe ask the more experienced tellers if they have the same problem and get any advice they might offer.

Good luck.

Crikey, that's harsh to think that isn't it? What a lot of senseless people there. That's why so many innocent ppl are so badly treated.

Good advice I think Steve. :)

There should be cameras monitering you all the time so that will prove that you haven't stolen money and you won't get fired over that. All you can do is be honest, hold your hands up and admit you made a mistake but stress that you didn't steal the money. Good luck!:)

What are the company policies concerning being over or under in your drawer? I know from talking to the tellers at my bank that they will hold them accountable, so if they are under, they must make up the difference.

I agree with some of the posts above. It is VERY important to be accurate in your counts. I would go to them and talk to them about it before they come to you.

one time i went to deposit $900 cash from my paycheck... i dont remember why i had it in cash... but thats besides the point... so i went to my drive thru- put the cash in, filled in the slip... sent it through-- phone rang.. and i was in the middle of a conversation when the little box came back... i threw the envelope and slip in my purse... soa few days later i get to dunkin donuts and i go to pull out cash... im like WTF? i thought i deposited my paycheck... so then i find the slip... they gave me credit for the deposit, and gave me the cash back... oops

Innocent or not, she's stealing from the bank customers, unintentionally of course. I just say, take the first step and get out while you can unscathed. Banks do not play around at all with missing money. Being bonded is like having government security clearance. Once you get fired while bonded, you will never be able to work in a bank handling money ever again.

Count the money three times if you have to. As a customer, I'd be willing to sit thru someone counting the money multiple times to be sure. Good luck, I want to see you succeed! :)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sorry, noooooooooooo, not you thinking harsh, I meant it about the bank if that's what they do think, sorry Steve. Just re-read my post and can see why you must have thought that. Sorry for the confusion. :)

No problem 'Ria. I also didn't mean to sound too harsh to Clare either. I want to see her happy and succeeding just like the rest of us!

Yeah, was shocked that the bank could be thinking that harsh, that's what I was thinking. That is so tough for anyone isn't it? What a hurdle to get over if they take those thoughts about her.:(

I hope she does OK and won't have the finger pointed at her.

We are all behind you Clare, on this one. :) *hugs*

I remember when I put my tax refund into my account and started writing bills. 11 days later I get an "overdraft" notice in the mail. That next monday I walked in and said um... what? Turns out that the lady put my refund into my brothers account. lol

I don't know what to tell ya as far as being helpful, but just like with building something out of wood - measure twice, cut once.

It may help to slow you down a little, and help to keep you more accurate in your counts.

I'd rather have a teller take a little extra time counting it twice than to come up 100 short, but at the same time I know I've miscounted and thought I had more too.
