We were talking about that here earlier. There's a restaurant in town here that doesn't pay an hourly rate....you work for your tips (I didn't even think that was legal here), but it would be pretty nerve-racking. Slow night or cranky customers would really put the fucks to your shift.

I tip 99% of the time. The service would have to be absolutely horrible for me to leave nothing, actually I think I only did that twice in my life.

I tip 20% on avg. at a restaurant...change at Tim Horton's in the morning...it depends which hair dresser, one I go to owns her shop, I just usually round up with her, which is a couple of bucks, if I go to another place, I tip 20%. Ummm....last week a gas attendant was so sweet and cleaned my wind shield and headlights that I had to give him $5 (I don't know what would be expected, but that was all I had on me).

So ya, I generally do. :) I want good service to be rewarded.

I do if the service by the waiter/waitress has been good. I don't tip a set amount, just a pound coin and change.

I tip unless the service is totally horrendous. At which time I usually leave a snide comment on the receipt with exact change.

I never treat servers poorly though, no matter how bad the service. I like my food without spit. :D

i have worked for $2.13 (waitress wages) so i tend to tip well, especially if the service was excellent. i have left a $20 tip on a $15 tab.

when you think about how dire the economy is you just can't leave nothing. My wife says I do the above and beyond in the tipping department but hey, they have to make a living too. I always ask if the staff is pooling tips and if they are I hand the waiter/waitress more in their hand.

I always tip, having been a waitress. I tip a few cents if they are very bad because I want the waiter to know I didn't just forget. I think this has only happened twicel. It's more insulting to get a few pennies-that is an insult, getting nothing may mean you are someone who doesn't tip.

I was not a very good waitress so I know how hard it is. I used to ball out a friend of mine and shame her into tipping when she was with me.

I always tip. I give extra if the service is outstanding.

I feel they deserve to be tipped for the kind of job and quality of service they provide (never experienced totally horrendous service- so I can't say that I won't/didn't)

It depends on the service... I've left double my bill as a tip, and I've left a penny or a nickel on the receipt before. Oh, and I wrote a note once saying that they should have given a tip to me for having to put up with their horrendous service.

I tip if I feel I have been giving good service and the food was worth the money, I usually tip depending on how much change I have on me. Although if I pay on card it sometimes asks if I want to give a tip, in which case I'll add £2 or something :p

Unless the service is absolutely horrid I'll always tip at least the 10%, more for really good service.

You could argue that they dont deserve a tip... seeing as its there job to serve you and there already getting paid to do this in the first place :p

I tip about 15% at the restaurant and give a tip when I get my hair cut.

I'm going to get flack for this, but I personally think tipping is ridiculous for the most part. It's become an obligation that you're pressured to do rather than a discretionary courtesy based on the service. I've worked lots of minimum wage jobs, did them to the best of my ability and went above and beyond for that nice customer, never expecting a tip. Yet, if you go to a restaurant and tip too low you're an asshole.

Restaurants should just be forced to pay their employees at least minimum wage so they don't have to rely so much on tips. Then the tips become something "a little extra" instead of the main source of income from the job.

it would be nice if the servers. waitresses, bartenders etc got a decent wage but they don't. seeing how things work at a restaurant and how much each person "pays" the restaurant makes you wonder how they make any money at all! but on the other hand you could make a ton off tips if it is done properly.
