Last night Alicia and I went to a taping of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart in Manhattan. The line was long and we had to wait almost 2 hours to get in, but it was definitely worth it.
Once we got seated a comedian came out to warm up the crowd of 250 or so. He was pretty good, had the place laughing and participating. Then Jon came out and let the crowd ask him questions, I was surprised how funny he is off camera and very quick witted. That lasted about 20 minutes or so and they got right into the taping of the show.
First a few points of interest. There are about 50 microphones hanging over the audience to capture our reactions. There is no post production laugh track and we are not cued when to laugh or applaud. The show is taped in one continuous take, there isn't any post production. It happens exactly like you see it on TV, so a 30 minute show takes under 30 minutes to make since we only stop for a minute or so where the commercials would be.

All in all, it was a good time. It's fun to see what's going on behind the scenes. And the guest was Judah Friedlander talking about his new book, "How to beat up anybody" He was pretty funny to say the least.

I always wanted to go see Oprah. You know.... the show where she gives everyone in the audience her favorite things?

That would have been awesome.

But yeah..... Jon Stewart.... Nice.

You know that she came here last year and did that show??? Apparently her highest ratings come from Macon, GA and she wanted to pay us back. You had to submit an essay as to why you should be given tickets to the show...I didn't get picked, LOL A friend of mine's wife did, though, and got all that stuff she gave away.

Tickets to shows like this are free. You just need to sign up weeks in advance. Then they overbook shows, so you need to get there early to make sure you get in. If it's bad weather you can show up without tickets and hope enough people don't show up and you can get right in on stand-by. But if it's a popular show, you won't have much of a chance of that happening.

I tried to get tickets for Oprah's show and there was always some message about try back at a later time/date or some such nonsense. I gave up eventually.

.... and to think I'm a member of her site too. *sigh*
