Last night Alicia and I went to a taping of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart in Manhattan. The line was long and we had to wait almost 2 hours to get in, but it was definitely worth it.
Once we got seated a comedian came out to warm up the crowd of 250 or so. He was pretty good, had the place laughing and participating. Then Jon came out and let the crowd ask him questions, I was surprised how funny he is off camera and very quick witted. That lasted about 20 minutes or so and they got right into the taping of the show.
First a few points of interest. There are about 50 microphones hanging over the audience to capture our reactions. There is no post production laugh track and we are not cued when to laugh or applaud. The show is taped in one continuous take, there isn't any post production. It happens exactly like you see it on TV, so a 30 minute show takes under 30 minutes to make since we only stop for a minute or so where the commercials would be.
All in all, it was a good time. It's fun to see what's going on behind the scenes. And the guest was Judah Friedlander talking about his new book, "How to beat up anybody" He was pretty funny to say the least.
