i dont know much about this game but his injury makes news in Canada so i guess it is a big deal

i know enough to know that if he could not play in the WC finals for England they would suffer as he is a great player

question is now that they say his ligament damage is minor and that he should recover in time, does his club have any obligation whatosever to rest him and ensure he can play in South Africa, or will Manchester play him once they think he is fit and possibly risk his chance, i guess the question is who gets the say club or country

The Club always get the say because they are Wayne Rooney's employers. So no, Manchester United have no obligation whatsoever to rest Wayne Rooney.

As far as England go, I couldn't give a shit about them. I'm a Manchester United fan and really the coverage has been shocking with regard to his injury.

'England WC Bid dealt a blow with the news Rooney could be out'

WE ARE HIS FUCKING CLUB, THE TEAM HE PLAYS FOR AT THE MOMENT, IT SHOULD BE

'Manchester United Title Bid dealt a blow with the news Rooney will be out for 4 weeks'

As I said, I don't like England, they underachieve so much and when people come out from under their rocks every four years and support them and then blame someone else for the fact England are bottlers just makes me sick. England won't win the WC anyway, with or without Rooney.

i get the passion in your post

this is, I think correct me if I am wrong fellow Canucks, not the way we would view stuff

Hockey players are owned by their clubs not their country in the same way that Man Utd own Rooney

Sydney Crosby is owned by Pittsburgh not Canada, BUT if just before the olympics he got injured, despite what the club did the fans would push for him to rest and play for his country before his club, at least the Canadian fans woudl the US Crosby fans would probably prefer he did not paly for his country

porterjack,

If Alfie is injured, I`d rather have him rested for the playoffs instead of going to a World Championship or Olympics to play for Sweden. The Ottawa Senators are his employers and pay his salary, I truly believe they have the last say in the matter, it should be the same for Pittsburgh with Crosby.

:thumbdown

You should support your country irregardless of chances.

Of course, being a Man Utd supporter, you wouldn't understand that :24:

No, our fans don't burn effigies of England players just because they get sent off in tournaments ;)

And as for supporting England, why should I just because I'm English? I don't support the rugby team, I don't support the cricket team, and I certainly don't support any english tennis players. And it also makes me sick that Worzel Gummidge suddenly turns British for Wimbledon...when he's Scottish.

And England fans who go to the games are arseholes. They boo Man United players (Neville, Beckham - when he was here, even Rooney's been booed in the past) and that should never happen because they are representing England. I would never boo an England player because of that very reason. Then again, I don't blame people for wanting England to win stuff, becauyse the clubs they support are usually shite.

Lots of AUssies play club football in England, and rarely get released to train and practice with the Aussie side....

Too far, too expensive.....all the usual reasons.

I'm actually not sure how I feel about the subject. I am passionate about my country but I also bleed Flames red. If it was Iginla, I would be torn. To be honest, when Kiprusoff sat out for the Olympics that one time to rest his hip I was pleased. Not because Finland lost a high quality player but because it improved the Flames chances. (Well, theoretically it did. In reality they still managed to lose in the first round of the playoffs that year...*sigh*) It's a double-edged sword, really.

You say that because he plays for Sweden, not Canada. :jk

Unfortunately, Springers opinion of his country at football is very popular amongst supporters of the "big four" teams (Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea........though not so much in my experience with Chelsea fans)

And I'm not a glory hunter. So don't accuse me of being one. Just because I can't afford to go to games doesn't mean I don't give as much support as the people that do. I have supported United for many years and it hasn't always been good. There have been times when we haven't won the Premiership and it hurt like hell to see the other teams win it, but you go on and get on with it. You have to realise that not every year will be a successful one, we might only win one trophy this year (the already won League Cup) and while that's a disappointment, we have to just move on and build for next season. Of course we might well end up winning the treble, it's a really fine line.

And as for England, again, I don't really care what they do/don't do. And believe me, it's not just a big 4 opinion, I know fans of other clubs who don't give two hoots about England because their club comes first and foremost.

Well I never accused you of being a glory hunter.

The bold section sums up how you can't appreciate how a "normal" fan would feel. "Oh woh is me, there were times when we didn't win the Premiership!"

And I was talking about my experience of fans of the big 4, if yours is different, so be it. I have been to tournaments with England and there are supporters there from all clubs, but hardly ever any from the big four. They have their prirorities.........

That wasn't my point. The problem was not us not winning the League (I can appreciate we will have bad seasons), it was the fact that other teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Blackburn) have won it, and to see their captain's lift that trophy was the worst part because, whiloe I knew they were the better team, it still hurt a lot. The same way that this season, if John Terry or Cesc Fabregas lift the trophy, it will hurt like hell regardless of where/how we finish.

And believe me, there are times I would love to support a lesser team because some of the pressure would be off because we are expected to win every game. We're expected to beat Bayern Munich on Wednesday, we're expected to beat Blackburn on Sunday. And I think that's the price you pay for being successful, ask any big club supporter. I mean one defeat and there's an inquest. If Aston Villa had lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea, or gone to Fulham and been beaten 3-0, then you would have said "Oh well, hop along", with us it's "OMG MAN UNITED LOST TO CHELSEA, THEY'RE IN CRISIS!"

And that, that right there, that's the very worst thing about supporting a big club.

Trust me. The pitiful wailing of "oh woh my team is expected to win every game, I may have to watch someone else lift a trophy" is NOTHING compared to the "I wonder if the team I've supported for so long is actually going to be in existence next season".

since when has finishing 2nd in the premier league been a bad season?.....you really should as TD stated try supporting a crystal palace or coventry city..things might be put into perspective for you then

and as for it hurting when other teams lift trophies, theres many premiership players i admire for they're ability, rooney, terry, gerrard etc etc...where i wish it was my team captain lifting the said trophy i dont begrudge them one bit,as i said...they have abilty which has helped them win the trophy

and to be honest i'd rather support my local side,we're solvent now and rebuilding in the right way....we're buying young hungry talented players who'll mature into a very good squad of players....they'll appreciate the club who gave them they're first break into really competitive football, not many will move on.....not that the same could be said about the foreign superstars the big clubs sign, the go to the highest bidder.....they have no love at all for the clubs they play for,its just a big pay cheque to them.....christiano ronaldo being a prime example

what you find with the supporters is the fans of the big sides are there for one reason only, and thats to say they support a team that wins things....at the lesser clubs its different,we have realism...i remember some years ago palece qualified for the play-offs at highfield road....the chant that came out of the west terrace at the end was...'you are going up said you are going up'

He is a hot tempered bully. I hope he is out of the WC.

Then you'll want gerrard out of then because he goes into nightclubs and punches DJ's. You'll also want Terry out of the WC because he goes around shagging other players wives/girlfiends. You'll also want Ashley Cole out of the WC because he plays away. You'll also want....yeah you get the point.

since when has finishing 2nd in the premier league been a bad season?.....

It is for us. Not so much for the fans viewpoint but believe me the gutter press feel that way, and they are the ones who call the inquests when we have the temerity to lose one game.

you really should as TD stated try supporting a crystal palace or coventry city..things might be put into perspective for you then

But those clubs are nowhere near me. I was born in Manchester, hence I support Manchester United. And your clubs are in debt....so what? A lot of clubs are, mainly through financial mismanagement and that is their own fault.

i dont begrudge them one bit,as i said...they have abilty which has helped them win the trophy

Yeah...and I never said I begrudge them winning it, but it still hurts to see them winning it because it isn't your club. Trust me, unless your club is in the race for winning it etc, you should never want any other team to win it.

and to be honest i'd rather support my local side,we're solvent now and rebuilding in the right way....we're buying young hungry talented players who'll mature into a very good squad of players....they'll appreciate the club who gave them they're first break into really competitive football, not many will move on.....not that the same could be said about the foreign superstars the big clubs sign, the go to the highest bidder.....they have no love at all for the clubs they play for,its just a big pay cheque to them.....christiano ronaldo being a prime example

Yeah....but you say this like we haven't ever nutured youth. Here's a few names who have gone on to play for other clubs after starting out here and I'm sure, even though they didn't make the grade at Old Trafford, they'd be very grateful for their football education.

Danny Simpson, David Jones, Robbie Savage, David Healy, Luke Chadwick, Danny Higginbotham, Ryan Shawcross, Richard Eckersly, Adam Eckersly, Frazier Campbell, Keiran Richardson.

And of course there's the players that have made the grade and gone on to have very successful careers with us, and in Phil Neville's, Nicky Butt's and David Beckham's case, a successful one after leaving us too. The likes of the forementioned two, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Ryan Giggs, Jonny Evans (albeit still learning, but will make it). And that is just in the Premiership era, we had plenty of success in the earlier years too.

what you find with the supporters is the fans of the big sides are there for one reason only, and thats to say they support a team that wins things....

Again, completely untrue, I support Man United because I dared to be born in Manchester and had my family support them, sure there are glory hunters, but they are present at other clubs (Man City has some now)

I mentioned abt english soccer hooligans here abt a year ago and you guys were in denial mode.
English Hooligans Banned From Traveling To World Cup In South Africa:24:
British government confirms traveling restrictions.

Known hooligans wil be prevented from travelling to this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa, the government confirmed on Tuesday.
Over 3,000 known troublemakers are currently subject to football banning orders in England and legislation will shortly be passed in the House of Commons that will allow Home Secretary Alan Johnson to impose a 'control period' on them.
Banning orders currently require those subject to them to hand in their passports to police before an England game abroad. In order to extend that sanction to the month-long duration of the World Cup, Mr Johnson must lay a statutory instrument before Parliament.
