That's not always the case though. I know some who could work it's just that they fall within the guidelines of being able to get disability. There are also so many that can cheat the system, not saying Dana has, but the system is not fool proof that's for sure.

I've read things about people who lied their way to get disability.... and were caught doing something that should have been nearly impossible for them to do based on the supposed disability. So yes..... I know there are those that will cheat the system.... and get away with it.

.... but I would like to reiterate that I did start off and end my post with..... I would like to think. :D

I would like to think that the government would have doctors (through examinations, etc.) make sure that a person cannot work physically or mentally prior to putting them on the government disability payroll. With that being said..... if a person is in fact on disability..... it must be necessary. I would like to think.......
there's a whole bucket o' worms there, momma!

ever heard of 'special sleaze initiative' ? (SSI) there are a whole lot of people sucking off the dole that are not mentally or physically impaired enough to justify full disability.

i'm a dissident activist of the peace and freedom wingnut independant constitutionalist type profiled as an 'unstable malcontent'. when i was shot but not killed as a consequence of sticking my nose too close to the contragate cocaine outlet stores in los angeles in 1987, i was refused any kind of disability benefits based on the physical injuries but was forced to accept a psychiatric disability to have any income at all for the many months it took to recover from my wound.

that put the last nails in an already nearly shut coffin on my career as a biochemist/zoologist. now i was unemployable with a potentially homicidal flag in my jacket (propaganda to discredit my credibility. they're just pissed because i'm real handy with firearms and explosives and refuse to kill anything with them for anybody :D).

the monthly benefit has never been enough to cover normal living expenses and i have always done something to earn extra income. in the 90's, i used the check to finance a mobile hippie medicine show and did real well until they ramped up the war on terrorism and blended it in with the war on drugs toward the end of the century and the first few years of the new. as long as i don't declare more than about $650/mo in earned income it won't effect my benefits.

i lost most of the property i had built up to dope fiends and the police who aid and abet them, so i'm not doing big shows right now -- just working the streets with my music and jewelry.

just because someone is disabled doesn't mean they can't work. as is always pointed out, there are people with very serious impairments that work full time.

I don't know... I think there are a lot of us that wouldn't be caught dead sitting at home doing nothing. I don't care what disability I had, I would want to do something. Hell even if it was working at home on the computer.

To say there is nothing for you is a cop out at best. You have all day to scour the internet looking for something to do. :dunno

I couldn't even get a computer job... When a person can't type with both hands, they are going to hire the next person that can.

Indeed there is.

I'm sure there are.

I know a man who has a severely mentally challenged daughter... She works at the local grocery store. Not full time though. But he gets money from the govt. to provide her with a home and care for her..... along with whatever earnings she brings home.

Other than that example..... I don't know of anyone else personally that is seriously impaired and working.

You're unable to type with both hands? Is that part of your disability as well? Because all you mentioned was the fact that you can't stand for long periods of time. If it's an issue of typing speed... I have users at my job that peck and hunt their way through every e-mail or document they type up, and yet they have jobs. If you can operate a mouse and type faster than about 5 words a minute, you could find a job where you sit at a computer.

Just saying...

Do you not understand that if he wanted a job, he would have one. Would you be sitting at home like that?

I spent a good half of 2004 out of work... it drove me absolutely insane. I spent almost all day every day looking for jobs when I didn't have one, and the rest of the time I went stir crazy. My ex and I only had one car at the time, and we didn't have a lot of extra money for gas for me to be just driving around, so I sat at home and went crazy. I seriously can't fathom just sitting around all day long every single day in front of the computer doing nothing. I get stir crazy at work as it is when it's slow.

I have been disabled since 1996 and yet I have worked up until April of last year. The only reason I'm not working now is because I moved to a different state and there is no public transportation in my town. So I just started a project online to keep myself busy until I move into the city and then I will go back to work. And I have many disabilities but I don't let them stop me from trying to work the best I can. Plus I don't use them as an excuse for anything....
