Grace has some good points. But the American public is also able to recieve grants, student loans. If you are homeless, there are shelters and there is day labor. If you can not work you can get public housing and disability. The good public does have avenues, but most of us dont know how to actually walk down them. I couldnt begin to tell you how to apply for a grant. : (

You are so right Boomer. When my hubby was underemployed for a period, we needed help for a time with medical expenses, they said we were approved and we had no clue how to use them. The system was a joke. Our tax dollars are still paying for all the mail and phone calls we receive when we haven't needed their help for years now. I keep telling them and they keep calling and have a person on our 'case file', etc. It is ridiculous.

It seems like the system was made to be confusing. Did you ever hear about this stuff in school? How to practice your rights? How to get what you are eligable for from the government? Nope. So you go to some office to get help and catch a bunch of attitude for your questions. They treat you like a flea ridden dog, hand you some papers and push you out the door. NEXT!!

The point is that the mockumentary you posted is painting with broad strokes, meaning that it is coming across that what is seen in that video the norm in our prison systems and it isn't. People are not dying of malnutrition, not getting medical care, etc. In the prison system people ARE being fed, while law abiding citizens don't have enough money to eat. In the prison system people have a roof over their head, while many law abiding homeless people don't. In the prison system people get medical care, while middle class law abiding citizens can't afford health insurance or health care. In the prison system they are getting a college education, while law abiding citizens can't afford to do so. All I am saying is that your mockumentary is not showing the whole picture. It is biased as all can be.
I don't think the documentary suggests that people in American prisons are not fed or recieve health care. Both are human rights and I'm glad they do recieve it, along with public education (College). Same happens over here in Spain. I do know a law abiding citizen in American doesn't have the same luck but that's a whole other topic revolving around health care (which I think should be universal always) and other issues. A law abiding citizen over here ALWAYS has health care and education. Makes you wonder why in the US sadly not.

Citizens, law abiding or not, over here always have health care and education as well.

What we do not always have is health INSURANCE.

All citizens, even non-citizens, can walk into any county hospital and get health care.

Yep. True story.

Up in Los Angeles county, the hospitals lose on average $1,000,000 a month providing free care to illegal immigrants. I'm sure you can add a few hundred thousand for low income families too.

We don't have people dying in the streets due to lack of medical care as some in the media would have us believe.

Exactly.

That being said we do have a crisis going on over here regarding affordable health insurance.
