The Summer Transfers Thread

It's not that so much (though it's a valid point), it's more the prices of players on the market. I mean last year Nasri (with a year left on his contract) went for £25m, Mata for £24m, Aguero for £35m, Jones for £18m, Young for £18m, Lukaku for £20m. All of which means that Spurs will have to pay a lot more to replace Modric, and because the £25m-£30m wouldn't all go on transfers, it makes it very difficult to replace him. But if they keep him and he wants to leave, you're getting an unhappy Modric. They had that with Berbatov (their best player at the time too ironically) and he kicked his heels in, became moody, and the fans started booing him. Who would they get? Well, he might be good, but not as good as Modric.

Personally I'd break the bank to buy Modric, he's that sort of player who wouldn't look at all out of place here, he's very creative, scores goals and link our play so well. I don't think he's worth £40m personally (£35m at an absolute maximum) but if we have to pay that much, so be it. We can afford to because the money's available ("You're £450m in debt!" "Yeah but we made a £100m profit last year, that's what matters") and in this market to buy the very best, you have to pay the big money.

On the "Webster Ruling" something similar nearly happened last year with us and Blackburn. Basically we offered the £18m which was needed to spring the clause in Jones's contract allowing him to negotiate freely with us. Blackburn's owners very nearly committed a breach of contract by nearly accepting a reported bid from Liverpool which was higher. Had they accepted that Jones's contract would have been null and void, and we'd have got him for nothing. Just as well they had a legal team who weren't thick.

Time to interject some American discussion, well kinda... anyone have any ideas on where Dempsey may be going? I know his contract with Fulham is expiring and he has no interest in returning, so I'm guessing they're going to be looking to get some value out of him. I've read some places that Manchester United and Arsenal both reportedly have interest in him, but who knows how accurate that actually is. Bocanegra's future looks to be up in the air, with the Rangers future completely uncertain, and he has an escape if they get stripped of their top tier status on July 4th, which may happen. Maurice Edu is in a similar boat, with his contract with them expiring after this season, and he reportedly isn't interested in staying around... if the club even still lives on.

Dempsey's a really good player, I'd say he's good enough to move up a level or two.

I'm not sure what they'd do with the Rangers situation if they got relegated to the bottom tier. I haven't followed it that closely but I assume there is already a contingency plan in place.

Yeah I don't think we could afford him..

Gylfi deal seems to have slipped at Liverpool, and he's now being linked with Tottenham. I think Gylfi would be an idiot to choose benchwarming at Liverpool over what we can offer him at Swansea. He wanted to leave Hoffenheim because he was sick of sitting on the bench, now all he seems to care about is who can offer him the biggest paycheck. IDK.. after all this time I don't want him here, he obviously doesn't want to join, the deal was done all he had to do was sign. I will however, wet my pants if none of these deals goes through and he heads back to Hoffenheim with his tail between his legs.

I've just seen on a Spanish newspaper that Real Madrid is interested in Modric.

In word of that newspaper, Modric will come to Madrid in exchange for Nuri Sahin and Ricardo Carvalho...

I'd really like to see Modric playing aside with Özil and Alonso, but Sahin is also a great player but who has been almost all year injured. Remember that he was elected as Best Player in Bundesliga two years ago.

Anyway, I don't believe this newspaper, they lie like dogs :)

What a news!!! Drogba has arrived Spain to sign with FC Barcelona!!!!
He had a contract signed with chinese team, Shanghai Shenhua but he has been seen landing in Barcelona. According to a special clause of the contract, Drogba could go free only to FC Barcelona.
¿Rumor or reality?
As Real Madrid supporter I hope it is fake, but as soccer lover, I'd like to see him playing in Spain.

Robin van Persie has announced he will not be extending his contract at Arsenal, with a statement on his official website reading: "I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions."

Van Persie statement.

Only time would tell if they're better off without him. He is their best player without doubt, he was the difference last year between them qualifying/not qualifying for the Champions League. He just felt his idea of the direction of the club (presumably a Title challenge) didn't match Arsenal's (Qualifying for the Champions League) and wants to leave because of that. They can command a handsome, if restrictive (due to the last year of his contract thing) fee for him. It's either sell him now or let his contract run down and risk losing him for nothing. With the way Arsenal are run (sic, have to be run) financially, the first choice is their only choice.

He wasn't that bad at the Euro's. He scored, which only Van der Vaart might also claim.

I'm disappointed in him. I don't ask for blind faith, but I don't think he's given enough back yet to the people who supported him when he was an injury-plagued nobody.
