You should, and I think it's extremely important to know the past.... lest you are doomed to repeat it. My generalization was not aimed at you per say, it was more a statement to the people that still act as if the war isn't over yet... people that care if your northern or southern, people that still fly the union jack above the stars and stripes, people who are intolerant in general. Those are the people I was referring.

I get where you're coming from.........but.......stereotype much?

:jk I understand what you're saying, and I can agree with that.

Well stereotyping would mean that I think all or even most of southerners think that way... I don't. Just because someone is southern, doesn't make them a redneck racist who can't let go of the war....

One thing you will learn about me, I don't ever judge people on who they are or where they come from... EVERYONE has a clean slate when they first meet me... I know way too many people from all over the world, and I have found that no matter how hard I would try, I would always come back to the same conclusion... we are all different and none of us truly fit into a stereotype...

I agree. Stereotypes are ridiculous.

Except some people live out stereotypes sometimes to the T, and its hilarious.

I knew that, but that was going out the door pretty fast and was very limited compared to the south.

Yes, but just like you yourself said in Peter's Revelations thread, you can't just pick and choose the good and overlook the bad. You can't say that slavery was a problem in the South and not mention that it was a problem up North too.
But, like Tim said, it's all in the past... over and done with.

The American Civil War was NOT, by definition, a civil war. According to Wikipedia: "A civil war is a war in which parties within the same culture, society or nationality fight against each other for the control of political power." The Confederacy never tried to capture DC, and did not want to take the North's political power. They wanted to form their own government, seperate from the US...Southerners helped turn this nation into what it is today. And remember, it's the victors who write the history books.

OMG! Thank you! This is VERY true. I am a political science major - or was - I got my degree thanks.

The civil war was very much about centralizing government. The south didn't want to become part of the central government; each state wanted to remain their own entity. The North wouldn't have this because the South had access to most ports and had a lot of money with tobacco, cotton, etc.

The North decided DURING the war to free the slaves so the south would be weakened and they would have a "moral" issue to make their cause just. Eventhough the north had slaves, it wasn't mostly large plantation system like it was in the south, so the north could go on with their trade a lot better than the south could without slaves.

The Confederacy flag, though I am not a fan of it, represents strong state government which is seen as a sort of rebellion. Although some people have taken it to mean other things...

But yes. I am tired of the villanization of the south.
