I don't know how I feel about the whole grabbing thing, the few clips they shows of it happening made it look like a bit of a game - none of the girls seemed upset or worried by it, before or after it happened to them. So does that really mean it's that bad? But then perhaps they only showed the lighter willing side of it to keep the program light-hearted. It certainly sounds like it has the potential for abuse as a traditional practice.

The girls they interviewed dont like it but accept it the same way they accept being used as a punching bag and a slave by their husbands. It's deeply ingrained into them that they are simply on earth to do what their men tell them and if they get hit its their own fault. They interviewed some gypsy boys in the series about grabbing and they were casually talking and laughing about punching girls during their grabbing ritual.

It's weird to watch, I saw the episode about the men just yesterday. I wonder if they've picked characters that are more likable than others, to try and get some sympathy out of it. None of the program so far has really dealt with their awful reputation, or questioned things like their weird attitude to relationships.

I mean, the most they've touched on is they illegal use of sites for their caravan parks. Even that was sort of glossed over and turned into a sob story for them getting kicked out.

If the're the most likeable ones the're still a bunch of arrogant wankers. Love how they were indignant about the way the police were treating them at Appleby so to prove what peaceful, respectful citizens they were they turned a load of horses loose, crapping all over the road and staged a big march through the village.
They seem to think there should be one law for them and one for everyone else. Wingeing on because he wasn't allowed to camp where he feels like - news flash - nor is anyone else.

I haven't seen last nights one yet but I saw the previews. It did make it look like they're very much trying to show gypsies as law abiding citizens who have been unlucky to get on the wrong side of people who look down on them. It'd be far more interesting if they confronted them about the vandalism and the illegal caravan parks.

pikeys get hate because they break the law, have no respect for anyone else and are generally offensive

:homo:

I find it amazing that people bow to this whole gypsy as a race thing. The simple fact is that this entire culture is based on thievery - it's no different in Spain. The gypsies here might look cute on postcards, but most of the crimes committed against myself and friends here have been done so by gypos. Live near a gypo camp and the crime is higher than from elsewhere.

And this grabbing BS - what kind of bullshit is that?

I don't see how the parents can accept some boy grabbing at their daughter like that. I pity the guy who tries that stunt with any daughter of mine.

If they were trying to show it like that, they pretty much failed. For the most part the gypsies came across as arrogant, sexist, racist, whiney criminals.
The bit that pretty much summed it up for me. Some 16 year old lad driving around (obviously illegally) with his mates in a souped up pick up truck. They came across a bit of a traffic jam as there was a road accident and someone, obviously badly hurt was being treated in the road. So the pikey just drives up on the pavement and drives past the queue and injured person. When asked why he just says "because I dont want to wait"
They just come across as seeing it as their right to own what they want and do what they please and it dosen't matter how they get that.

Probably because that's exactly how her parents met  they don't tend to marry out of their culture very often, and the parents are keen for their kids to carry on their 'traditions' like grabbing.

That's a huge problem with them here as well, the minute anyone says a word against them we're racist (or whatever the term is) I was driving to work one day passing some fields that they'd put some horses in and I swear to God one must have been standing on the ditch and it jumped and landed in the middle of the road right in front of my car, I was inches away from it when I managed to stop, it was so scary, If that was mine or any settled persons horse it'd be taken off us and we'd never be allowed keep one again. I nearly killed it and probably myself too.

Just watched last night's one. Honestly Peter I get what you're saying in that the gypsies don't make themselves look great, but are you listening to the commentary?! It's so sympathetic towards them, lots of stuff about 'the gypsies are fighting to keep their traditions alive' and 'persecution against gypsies is alive and well' with no real mention of the fact that it's because they're notorious for being rowdy and troublesome.

When that girl's family got kicked out a hotel for being too noisy it was all 'bridget's family have been asked to leave for being too noisy, ON THE NIGHT BEFORE HER WEDDING'. Like, never mind that you have to be pretty anti-social to get kicked out a hotel.

I was talking about this with my SO and we thought perhaps they had to agree to film them as sympathetically as possible before they could actually get access to them. I'd love to see a better expose though, that addresses why they've got such a bad reputation rather than skimming over it like it's a misunderstanding.

Yeah me too, I mean my view on them is based 100% on what I've actually seen of them, which is always trouble. If they're in front of me at a checkout there is always a problem. My brother worked in a bar for a bit and the only two times he had any trouble there both was to do with travellers. I've actually witnessed them stealing stuff a few times as well

Exactly, it seems like everyone has a bad experience they can relate from them. That can't be all coincidence. It was really interesting seeing their elaborate weddings and their weird courtship rituals, but I'd definitely watch something that was a bit grittier.

PS once had one of his tools stolen at a jobsite . He followed his gut instinct and found it in a gypsies' van parked at the site w/it's side-door open. One should never steal another man's tools. Especially when they're engraved with the owners initials.

That was an interesting encounter to say the least.

As for these women, too bad they don't have the (what's the right word) gumption to turn that shit around to where the men drop their pants and these women pick the best of the lot? Slim pickins perhaps?
