Hanging a 3x5' flag in a workspace could be excessive especially if you like pushing your ultra-right views on other people, although that is just an example. I don't know how pushy the lady is. Why not display a small desk size flag on your desk instead?

Cause this is America motherfucker, that's why.

:usa: :usa:Why don't you re-read my post. I was using that as an example (unsubstantiated) of why co-workers may not have liked it. If I was cohabiting a smallish workspace with others and someone unfurled a giant flag, I would not like it either, but it has nothing to do patriotic feelings towards my country. Admittedly "offense" was not an appropriate word to use in this case. "Overdoing it" would be better... :usa: :usa:
The article made no mention of the size of the workspace ;) I assume it's a decent size, considering it's shared with 3 other people :dunno :usa:

And I notice you have a picture of a bad terminator (as opposed to the good terminator) whose goal is to eradicate the human race... :humm: ;)
Maybe it's a subtle innuendo as to where I feel this line of over-the-top Politically Correctness will lead us :humm: ;)

And since I said over-the-top:

Why this shit even makes it into the national media baffles me. So someone got their flag removed, BFD... it looks like the company backed her and let her put it back up... So why is this all over the national media again?

Pick yourself up off the floor Moonie, I just agreed with you. Yeah, that just happened.

Dude, did you know I became a Republican after you left DW? I gave my highest campaign contribution ever to Ron Paul. Whole lot of good it did.... People are still to busy being divided to unite under the banner of Liberty. Sad for all of us eh?

Cuz it's not their job to tell us real news... You have to go to independent news blogs w/no major corporate sponsors for that. News everyone in the world but us gets to read, hear & see.

“The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized."

Maybe so, but if they didnt have a problem with what it represented then they probably wouldnt have complained. Who knows. Apparently the hospital didnt enjoy the shit storm and caved in.

I am, but this isn't a matter of first amendment rights. This 3'x5' flag was hung in an office shared by 4 supervisors throughout the day, this was not her personal office. It is not her personal property that she can do whatever she wants, this is her place of work where their rules stand. I mean would she be allowed to hang a 100' flag from the roof? Hell, it's our flag, how can anyone deny that?
First amendment rights don't come into play when you are talking about employee/employer. She does not have the right to display anything she wants in her office, even if it is the American flag. Her workplace has obligations to every employee/customer and this is exactly why they have rules for the workplace, large handbooks and a HR department.

This her quote...

"I find it very frightening because if I can't display my flag," McLucas asked, "whatother freedoms will I lose before all is said and done?"

Apparently she isn't to bright. She has no afforded freedoms at work to display anything she wants anytime she feels like it.

Funny story. In 2000 my request to put an Alabama Crimson Tide tag on front of my service truck was denied because it might offend customers who were fans of other schools. BUT then like 1 month later my boss sticks a Bush/Cheney 2000 sticker on every truck in our fleet.

What would people be most likely to take exception to? A college or a political party? I thought that was beyond ridiculous.

From that point of view, I can almost agree with what you're saying. And if it was anything but the American flag, I would agree. But I'll never agree that displaying our flag, especially to recognize Memorial Day, in any location, is a bad thing.

Also, they didn't tell her to remove it because it violated hospital policy and she doesn't have the right to display anything she wants in her office, she was told to remove it because it's offensive. And that's the part that offends me.

But that's the only point of view we can look at this from. This is a workplace and she doesn't have the right to display a 3'x5' flag, even if it is the stars and stripes.

I agree that the woman that complained over reacted, she needed to talk to her co-worker about it before she just took it down. A little more respect for the flag would have gone a long way here. But to blow this whole thing out of proportion that she was losing some of her rights is beyond ridiculous.

As I said much ado about nothing.

How this shit warrants national news is beyond me.

Gotta believe somebody wanted their 15 minutes of fame.

not if he owns the company. then he can pretty much do what ever he wants

He didnt, but the owner was a devout Republican and ok with it. But it was just the fact that one thing might cause hard feelings but something way more divisive was ok. Anyway I dont wanna hijack this thread.

I see both sides here. Doniie and Tim both make good points. At least in the end it was resolved and hopefully we wont hear any more about it.
