don't you want you govt to trust you?

that all seems highly outdated...
You missed the context. The author was referring to other governments, not the US gov't. The US gov't trusts us to be armed.

I can understand the belief in the principle more than the want to own a firearm. I've never personally wanted anything to do with firearms.

I would hate to the govt take away your right to own arms. But would you be willing to give the right up for a safer society?
Where does anything say anywhere that we have a right to a safer society? Who grants this right?

It was very strangely written...

I don't understand what you're on about - does it need to be said anywhere? It's simply a case of people wanting, and then it happening. It doesn't always have to be about rights.

It's a big difference in views towards the role of govt over there to over here. In Europe, we see govt generally as a tool to get what we, as a society want or need. Welfare, healthcare, pensions, a solid infrastructure etc etc - these are what we demand from our govts, and they generally provide.
No, they don't provide. Other taxpayers provide. They take and redistribute. Big difference. :)

true, but they are the mechanism. people are too busy to organise that kind of thing themselves at this moment in time. Hopefully, when we learn to work a little smarter, we'll be able to organise the govt out of existence :D

Strangely written, yes. It was 1788, I think.

"Right" was the word you used. A right is something to be claimed and, having claimed it, it must be given. We have no right to a safe society. It is a privilege we enjoy and guard jealously against those that would make us unsafe.

I like to think I have a right to a safe society. I certainly don't feel that anyone has the right to take that away. I do think that right to a safe society, however, needs to be balanced with liberty - I don't think the human race needs to be wrapped up in cotton wool...

I agree; it's just that your fulcrum is set pretty far left of mine. :D

It's the supreme law of our country, and is relevant. If something needs to be changed due to irrelevance, then we have a process to do so. You crack me up for feeling the need to attack our form of government when it's the only one in the world like it. While other countries have gone through 2. 3, 4, or more different types of government in the last 230+ years, ours has stood strong. No other country can claim that as far as I'm aware.

If you really believe that the defenses of your country are really so poor that there is even a chance that your country will get invaded and an emergency situation will arise where it will be necessary for a militia to rise up in its defense then, yes, I think you are very deluded!

Indeed, if that was the purpose of the 2nd Amendment. :smiley24:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State
, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

:dunno

Go read your American history, particularly the parts related to the formation of the country. Also, go read my comments about comma usage in the 18th-19th centuries.

As far as I am aware, it's hard to shoot people dead with an air rifle.;)

As far as I'm aware you can still kill people with cars, baseball bats, crowbars, and various and sundry other blunt, sharp, or otherwise dangerous objects. Guns don't kill people, guns don't even make it easier to kill people. People kill people.

Same old argument...and I'll give the same stock answer.....Its much easier to run from a knife, baseball bat crowbar et al...than a bullet.

I;ve yet to see anyone outrun a bullet.;)

People can throw knives pretty well too. I also don't think it's all that easy to run from a car that can drive 80-90MPH. The fact of the matter is that if you want to kill someone, you can use anything. If you really want to make it happen you will. Having access to a gun isn't going to change that. How do you feel about crossbows? They're not guns, but just as accurate and deadly as a gun, and they have a pretty impressive velocity too. Should everything that could be used as a weapon be illegal? Or just the ones with the stigmas attached to them like guns?

yeah but to throw 50 knives in a minute? Same with arrows?

I would much rather take my chances against ANY of the weapons you have listed than a gun.

(and I dont like Crossbows either);) They are strictly controlled here too, and illegal in some parts.:thumbup
