All the drug-runners who didn't wanna risk the death penalty started importing gum instead :D

:24: That's a consideration! :24: Caning is perferable to death. :D

These people I know, were a little freaked about the gum issue, so they made sure their luggage and pockets were gum free. :)

Seems a little extreme to cane people to keep the streets clean, huh? *shrugs*

Seeing Kelvin is so up on politics in the USA, I'd like to hear from him his views on what's going on in his own country, seeing its something we dont hear that much about over here. What are your views on these Singapore laws?

Bungee jumping is illegal.

The sale of gum is prohibited.

Homosexuals are not allowed to live in the country.

Oral sex is illegal unless it is used as a form of foreplay.
Pornography is illegal.

As it is considered pornographic, you may not walk around your home nude.

Failure to flush a public toilet after use may result in very hefty fines.
It is considered an offense to enter the country with cigarettes.
Cigarettes are illegal at all public places.
It is illegal to come within 50 meters of a pedestrian crossing marker on any street.
If you are convicted of littering three times, you will have to clean the streets on Sundays with a bib on saying, “I am a litterer.

WHOA! I missed that the first time I read it. Bungee jumping???

What's that about? I wouldn't ever even consider it myself, but it's not an issue of morality nor public consideration, so what's the deal???

amazing how kelvin wants to talk about the horrible things america does, doesnt fucking live here but sees fit to pass judgment on this country and yet suddenly doesnt want to talk about the things his own country does and lives there.

i know my country has its faults but i dont go around pointing out the shit other countries do and ignore what mine does.

thank you kelvin for proving yet again your true purpose here, to bash america.

That is exactly what I've heard the reasoning is behind it, they don't want to have it plastered on the streets and public spaces, like under tables.

I know people who go there on business and it was interesting that during meetings, sometimes, the Singpore attendees were chewing gum. So how did they get it, I wondered.

Kelvin, how could that be?
80% of the people here travel abroad for vacation. So its so easy to smuggle in chewing gums.

But will you not address some of the questions being posed here?

For instance is it not a violation of human rights to ask that they hide their sexuality, or face expulsion? I mean they are not allowed to live in the country, right?

How is merely being gay, impinging on other people?

We are a conservative asian country. Our values differ from the westen countries. We are a multi-racial country with a sizable muslim population (20%). We have to be sensitive here. Gay culture is unaceptable in many countries.

So that makes it alright to violate human rights?

If you can castigate the U.S. for its treatment of detainees at Gitmo as a violation of human rights, but can write off the rights of gays due to the "sensitivity" of 20% of the population, you are standing on some morally shaky grounds.

Human rights are human rights, period.

Which country does not violate human rights?

The United States is also diverse and has a large Christian community along with Jews, Muslims and those of other faiths. However, we don't force gays to leave or imprison them.

You missed my point. Do you not call out the U.S. on human rights?

If you do, but wave off criticism of Singapore for their violations, especially because you must be sensitive to your culture, you have lost the moral high ground.

We respect your laws. When you are in Rome do as the romans do to stay out of trouble. Like I said earliar we are different. We can't be emulating your laws. Different culture here.

I was not waving off criticisms. This is your chance to rant. I won't accuse you guys of singapore bashing, being anti-singapore, flaming or trolling. So feel free to speak your mind here.

Laws aren't always right. A law which forces many innocent people to live in fear and possibly face punishment, expulsion, or death for who they are is a gross human rights violation.

Amnesty International had alot to say abt us. We are still a first world country with one of the highest per capita incomes. If you wanna get rid of trigger happy mavericks and terrorists then the Internal Security Act which detains suspected terrorists without trial is the right approach.

Of course you were waving it off. You offer the mild explanation of "sensitivity" without acknowledging or adressing the fact it is a human rights violation, as Kyle says below,

A law which forces many innocent people to live in fear and possibly face punishment, expulsion, or death for who they are...

You merely accept it and excuse it due to your culture.

I'm not bashing Singapore, or flaming or trolling you.

If you will come to this forum though, ranting on about the U.S.' violation of human rights, it is hypocritical of you to not discuss the violations of your own country, beyond the excuse making you have done.

I never did talk abt human rights until you guys brought up the subject. I never did rant abt US human rights. I merely quoted a website cuz 2 persons earlier in the thread brought up the subject.

I cannot find the thread to which you referred in the post below, but I'm sure I've seen you question torture and waterboarding out side that that reference.

I waited to hear all your arguements. Now this puts the nail on the coffin. Look at my thread which I posted abt 8 months ago with gruesome pics of waterboarding and torture of prisoners.

From the same thread.

Before you talk abt human rights put your own house in order first. Before human rights get rid of your protectionism policies first. China is currenty the world's 3rd largest economy after USA and Japan. In the next decade china will overtake Japan. You will be caught off-guard in the next 2 decades.

Can we stick to the topic of discussion in this thread instead of straying and digging out threads which was posted here some 8 months ago.
