Absolutely they should be required. Playing sports on a team is a great learning experience. It builds team work skills, teaches kids to work together and forces interaction among kids that may never have participated before. School is about learning not letting the kids do what ever they want... What's next? Are we gonna let the kids decide that math isn't their thing and not take any more math classes?

"If I have to play sports, then I will sweat and my make-up will run.

I say all kids must go through basic training in the military after high school. Kids now days have no disipline or respect and they sure as hell aren't getting it from their parents. Nothing but a bunch of fat whiney punks that can't even read at a 5th grade level.

There are exceptions, but this is how I see the majority of kids today.

what the fuck? it that "a typical high schooler"? :D

Tim, isn't that what gym class is for? Sports are extracurricular activities, just like boyscouts or drama club. The purpose of gym class is to expose everyone to sports and the concepts of playing as a team.

I don't think that after school sports should be mandatory. I was refering to team sports in gym class. If this thread is about staying after school to participate in team sports, then my answer does not apply. :D

oh, well then i agree with you :lol

quite being cryptic :fu

i think so....just so people will at least be FORCED to try and bring out hidden talents and possibly build some sort of confidence....you wouldn't believe how many hidden talents people have if they just had some sort of positive reinforcement.

Force certain kids into doing something they have no interest in... I dare you.

No, sports should not be FORCED on every kid. You have those kids who are unsure of themselves and just want to stick in the background. To me that's just like forcing every kid to go to ART class, metalshop or woodshop. I loved art, but I was never really good at envisioning things, so woodshop and metalshop really sucked for me.

I liked gym, but I'm not very athletic at all. Looking back at high school, I really wish I woulda gotten into football to be a wide receiver. I used to be able to run with the best of them. Hell even with my stature, I have a better throwing arm than my brother who's got about 60 lbs on me with more muscle mass.

I can spiral the football with the best of them. Once I'm warmed up, a 60 yard pass was no problem for me... accuracy though, lol I had problems there. BUT that would come with practice.

Haha, what a joke, what do you think school is?

PE has to be there. Too bad if you cant hit a three pointer. Get out there and get a lil active. But are you asking if a student should HAVE TO try out for an extra curricular sport? Thats crazy, where in the US is this even happening?

Gym was awesome in school and everyone should have gym. i know most states its the law but joining the after school sport team should be up to the student not a mandatory thing.

only sport i played for school was baseball and a few practices of football until i broke my finger on the sled. but i did play soccer and baseball for my community from like 6 year old till about 17. but my baseball career ended at 16 cause i took a line drive right to the side of the eye.

i dint really feel it when it happened cause it happened so fast. i was catching the balls for the coach to give to him durring batting practice and a kid that was up hit the ball and i was right behind the coach. well the coach ducks like the pussy that he was and all i see is this ball coming straight at me and no time to do anything and the baseball hits me right next to the eye on the bone between the eye and the temple knocking me back and rolling backwards. well i was on the ground for like a minute not moving knocked out and then i got up and there telling me to sit down. well i look in the mirror in the coaches car and my eye was all black and blue and my eye was filled with blood and couldnt see for a little while out that eye.

but if that ball would of went like a inch to the left it would of hit me straight dead in the eye. and most def. blind or dead or if i got hit in the temple i would of died no ifs ands or buts. so i was extremly lucky that i got hit where i did.

what if they play in the little league? :dunno
anyways, you don't have to have a "talent" to play on your school team. especially football, which is like the easiest fucking sport ever.

Apparentally you do...Doesn't look like you made it as a WR. And btw Tim, I would kick that kids ass if I ever saw him.

physical education...yes...sports...no

rule of thumb if its not broke dont fix it

participation on a sports team should be optional ..besides are you realyl going to have 3000 people on the sidelines at a football game? you cant have cuts and have to have everyone on the team

on the plus side by forcing everyone to play sports would take away the competiveness since you would have to play everyone, even those with no athletic abiltity

high school sports wouldnt be a comodity anymore ..people would stop coming to games because if you have a team full of non athletic people who dont love it then your win/lose record wouldnt be very good at all

Yes, why not? What's wrong with that? I'm not saying that the kids should be marked for their abilities, but it's definitely good for them to move a bit, especially today when most of the children (including me, although I'm not a child d015.gif ) spend the whole day sitting by the computer and not moving at all. That's exactly why I made myself start going to the gym.

Edit: Now I see you were talking about the teams ... well, that should be optional, but physical education should be compulsory.

Tell the kid in the wheelchair that he has to join an after school sports team to graduate. Way to go weinee. Seriously, after school sports should be for the kids that want to be there. Talented or not you don't play well if you don't want to be there.

I kind of like the way my high school did it. You had to have one gym credit to graduate, so you can take that gym wherever and however you want. You could take physical education in grade nine or ten, or wait until grade eleven and take off-campus gym (things like yoga, diving, etc.) or take a kinesiology course or something. I just took a phys ed in grade nine, and then didn't worry about it.

TEAMS should obviously be optional. I mean, sheer numbers makes that pretty much obvious.
