I think it was Katrina that strengthened but then died at the very last minute. If you can call a Cat 3 dying. But it was a Cat 5 right as it was coming in. If memory serves.

ah but Katrina was not the problem there

They withstood the initial storm

It was the failure of the levees after the storm which was the problem. No great surprise as most of the city should never been built... but still they would have been ok were it not for the flooding due to the levees failing.
 
You wouldnt be able to tell from where i am in queensland that there was even a cyclone last night.... Its a sunny day outside with a little cloud coverage and its hitting close to 35. Apparently the cyclone went down to a cetegory 2 over night. When it hit the smaller towns it was a cat 5. People are still waiting in their homes for the gov to tell em its ok to come out.
 
I also heard that NO insurance will cover a Cat 5 Cyclone.:mad

Luckily it was downgraded to a 4 at nearly the last minute.
