I have a theory about this, Revelations at least, and perhaps the entire Bible.

*dons flame retardant clothing*

I believe, that the Roman Empire, when they decided that Cristianity was going to lead to more power and wealth. And then adopted and created Catholicism decided to leave out certain areas of the Bible they thought might sway folks, and possibly even re-wrote certain areas to suit the needs of the Catholic Church.

Not trying to offend any religious people on here or anything but do you think St Paul was on drugs when he wrote the book of Revelations in the Bible? Seriously, there is some really weird fucked up shit in that book of the Bible!:eek

peter ,you dont offend me at all with this question..
when people first find out im a christian they ask two things...first how and why did that happen to me and then the next one is always about this particular book.

now,if im in a bit of a shitty mood and cant be bothered my set reply is that when john wrote those letters he had eaten some mouldy rye bread, and then i wink and smile....so how could i be offended.

if theyre actually interested and i feel good that day ill talk about it.the book of revelation has always been difficult for me for obvious reasons and is difficult for many christians i think.i had before my conversion thought of it as a code which only those seven churches might understand and that was why its so much like spinal tap lyrics.

it is a piece of work which has been said to speak with great power to christians and people who face persecution, and so has been a favourite of desmond tutu, and allan boesak, and has quite a lot of importance in black hermeneutics.its quite often said that ..when christians face persecution it speaks with fresh power..a classic line youll here about it.

as for some of the weird stuff aman called beasley murrey said that its images represent recognizable stereotypes for that time ,like our john bull or the yanks uncle sam,and that these images were common in apocalyptic literature of that day.so it certainly was also political and also a cultural norm for its time...so no wonder we struggle with it.

a good book but a bit brain hurting with lots of interesting stuff on it is "new horizons in hermaneutics" by anthony c thiselton,i borrowed it off rev netherwood in the village when we got into a debate about a story from the new testament which i thought to be political.

no i dont understand it i dont have a degree in theology, but i see the beast as political tyranny and the prostitute as economic control...so it speaks to me in that way...and sometimes gives me hope.

bad boy ,do you know that santa was at nicene, apparently he wasnt wearing his red cocacola outfit but was like all hermits grubby and flea ridden, but his opinion was respected there.
the vatigan houses lots of things were not allowed to see, many gnostic scriptures for example, although im not supposed to ,i have read the gospel of thomas and of mary magdalene.
but you cant beat a bit of revelation to make you ponder;)
