Re: Purpose of Life: To beHhappy?

Regardless of its purpose in life, one cannot obtain happiness when seeking to be happy. Seek to be useful to others, and happiness comes with that.

I don't think anyone seeks to be happy per sey. They seek to achieve what ever goals are important to them and by being successful, achieve happiness. Being useful to others is kind of a vague statement. Helping others can result in happiness, true.

In my ethics class, my teacher asked all the students what they wanted out of life; their answer was to 'be happy' (all of them).

To a large extent drugs do influence people to engage in criminal activity. Those that do engage in criminal activity deserve criminal punishment.

While I agree that crime begets crime, I don't believe that drug use itself influences anything except perhaps a-motivational syndrome.

Criminal activity related to drugs is a side effect of government policy. Without price controls in place, folks resort to crime in order to pay for their drugs.

In addition, drug dealers have no recourse when drugs are stolen from them. They can't call the police when a buyer steals or refuses to pay. Dealers are forced to use violence (or threats of violence) in order to protect their business. They can't buy insurance to protect financial investments.

This is true. Can't argue with that.

For mysel, I do think all my life is aimed at my own personal happiness.

My spiritual faith, any possible relationships I may get in, all of them are somehow directed in my best interests. My best interests are things that will make me happy. I believe most people are the same if you look at it from a very broad point of view.
