It's related to the "Protest against taxes" thread (http://www.offtopicz.net/28890-protest-against-taxes.html).

Given the fact that school's starting in 2 days, I thought I'd stage another peaceful protest and cry of anger, sadness, and integrity from those who don't respect the idea of free, public education. I know this is going to make a lot of people angry, but, hey, if you don't like it, don't read it. And I don't intend this to be a debate thread - this is a protest thread. We don't come to your hippie marches, don't come to ours. K?*

I'll be posting some websites, pictures, and videos soon (if I can find any).

NO PUBLIC EDUCATION!!

* But given what happened the last time I staged a virtual one man protest, I don't expect anyone to take this seriously.

I do have to say that public schools maybe don't have the quality of education that private ones do, but I don't know if I'd want to abolish them, maybe just a re-haul.

FFS are you serious?

My children go to a public school, my brother and I both went to public schools, its not the way kids are treated its if the child themselves want to learn, and if they couldnt be fucked learning in a public school what makes you think they would want to learn in a private school? not to mention the fees involved.

Basic point if a parent cannot push their child enough to "want" to learn in either public or private school then its the parents fault wouldnt you say?

Brilliant idea once again, lets go back to the good old days when beeing born with a silver spoon in your mouth was the only way to get a good education so the majority of the country was badly under educated and living in poverty.:thumbup

ok......stop free education.......i'm all for that......but by the same token stop deducting me taxes......after all i pay for these schools with every minute i work

theres no such thing as a free education

and stopping free education will only serve to keep less wealthy children from bettering themselves

Are you afrad of anything that even seems a little red? State funded education is not a bad thing!

Phone call for you, it's John Birch. He wants his paranoia back.

hmmm....if this is indeed true -and it is, imo...or at least the expectation of education (and the purpose of its "discipline" and its endless battery of standardized tests) has resolved itself into prepartion for the best job possible- then the actual difference between public and private schools could be argued as an issue of quality

but is in fact only an issue of quanitity.....more homework, more rigor

same expectation.....providing us parents with a sense of security that our kids will survive economically

whatever happened to the idea of education as instilling critical thought? of learning how to learn?

there ARE plenty of educators (at least in my experience) who see these things as vital to the health of our children and our society.....they are themselves both of conservative and liberal political philosophy, and yet the idea of "accountability" undermines so much of their effort.

the idea of education as a process seems to have been lost.....replace by the idea of education as a yardstick to hold up against "results"......education is "good" if results are "good"

the fact that intellectual stimulation is secondary is not an issue....it's become a parent's job to force their kids into that pressure cooker of results...and then to be all shocked when so many of them fail under the pressure, or just give up....

it's social engineering, imo......

I agree. That's part of the reason I don't support public schools - I don't believe the Government is capable of teaching people how to think.

Not that private schools today do much better, but I have more trust in a private school's capablity then a governments.
And there's also the moral issue - I don't believe anyone should be forced to finance another person's child's education, and I don't think the state has the right to tell me what to do with my time or to tell my parents what they can and can't do with their children.

But your parents have the right to pull your ass out of school and send you to private school or home school you. The government isn't forcing your parents to do anything.

and as far as abolishing public schools and making them all private... think about it for a moment, do you honestly think that private schools will continue to perform as well as they do now once all the public school children are forced down their throats? Right now private schools perform better because it's only a select few that get to go. They are mostly from more affluent homes/more stable home environments. That will change once the "poor" kids get there.... don't you think?

And face it, your just pissed because you have to go back in a few days. It wouldn't matter if it was home, public or private school.

The public school system is horrible and needs to be fixed, no doubt. But it is in everyone's interest to educate our children. When the population as a whole has a good education, it benefits all of us as a nation. This is why Miss Jones down the street, who has no children, still contributes tax dollars to educating the children in her neighborhood.
