I don’t know how many of you may know of Pink Floyd. If you are fortunate to know of their music you may know that they were pioneers of their era and created some of the most memorable, innovative and timeless music and video productions of their time and still credible to this day. They were indeed ahead of their time. The two main driving forces in later years were Roger Waters and David Gilmore, Roger being the most prolific writer I believe and my favorite.

Unfortunately, because of personal differences the band split with Roger forming his own band and performing many of their great hits including new compositions, and David continuing with the band Pink Floyd also performing their timeless music. Both touring and performing to sold out audiences worldwide. Because of the split die hard fans remained loyal to Roger Waters, others to David Gilmore and others fans of both, but one thing is certain, they are both great and the music is classic.

This is a tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time.

Background:

Pink Floyd was formed in 1964 as an outgrowth of an earlier band called variously The Architectural Abdabs/The Screaming Abdabs/Sigma 6, Pink Floyd is a British rock band famous for their songwriting and psychedelic style, ranking #7 behind The Beatles in number of albums sold worldwide.

Pink Floyd originally consisted of Bob Klose (lead guitar), Syd Barrett (vocals, rhythm guitar), Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals), Roger Waters (bass, vocals) and Nick Mason (drums) and named in tribute to two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. As Barrett started writing tunes more influenced by American surf music, psychedelic rock, and British whimsy, humor and literature, the heavily jazz-orientated Klose departed and left a rather stable foursome whose configuration would last for several years.

I'm not a huge fan, but Dark Side of the Moon is fuckin' eh.

I don't like the Wall as a whole, but it had some great songs. Mother, Comfotably Numb, and Hey You for example

Background (continued)

The sound was hardened somewhat in 1968 when guitarist David Gilmour joined the band. In 1969, Barrett suffered a mental breakdown, attributed to prolonged usage of hallucinogenic drugs (especially LSD). With Barrett's state becoming less and less predictable, the band's live shows became increasingly ramshackle until eventually the other band members simply stopped taking Barrett to the concerts, with Waters and Gilmour taking his place as lead vocalists.

As of 2003, Pink Floyd have released 14 studio albums, 3 live albums, and 4 compilation albums.

Distinctive Eras:

There are distinct eras of Pink Floyd's sound.
(1) The Syd Barrett era (1966-'67): Barrett was responsible for most of the writing, which was very psychedelic, lyrics often being a recollection of LSD trips and weird imagery.

(2) The "post-Syd" era (1968-'72): After Syd's departure, the band searched for a new direction, becoming more experimental with their equipment while trying to retain melody, eventually perfecting "their sound" with 1973's "Dark Side of the Moon".

(3) The "Waters" era (1973-1985): From 1973 to 1979, Roger Waters gradually became the sole creator of Pink Floyd's music and lyrics, leaving in 1985 certain that the band couldn't continue without him.

(4) The "Gilmour" era (1986-present): David Gilmour proved that Pink Floyd could continue without Waters.

Where Are They Now:

(December 2003) David Gilmour is working on a DVD of PULSE (1994 Live concert recorded at Earls Court, London)

(December 2003) Roger Waters is currently working on a new album and possible 2004 tour.

(July 2005) Performed at the "Live 8" concert in Britain. (Breathe, Money, Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb)

From the Album/Movie "The Wall", Pink played by Bob Geldof .
Pink is fazed out by all the effects of drug abuse. He shaves and in the process shaves off his nipples and eyebrows in trying to clean himself unawares of the reality of his doing, searching.

It is said that one of the founding members Syd Barrett actually walked in for a recording session in this state, hence the birth of the song and video concept. Syd eventually had a mental breakdown from the abuses of drugs and had to leave the band making way for David Gilmour to replace him. Syd was never able to return and died just a few years ago at 60-something I believe.

Not for the squeamish...

I could well imagine. Never been fortunate to see them live other than the concerts on DVD but if I got the chance I surely would love to be there front row.
