I think I am, for the most part conservative/republican. I agree with everything SgtSpike said, except maybe the last thing- there aren't enough pretty, natural places left in the world.
True, and I would agree with that, but they have amazing technology for drilling now. You wouldn't have big ugly drilling rigs in the middle of the park - all you'd have is a cap at ground level about 2 feet in diameter, and from there, they can just pump it underground to wherever they need it. And I can deal with that little cap at ground level for keeping gas prices down, helping our economy, and helping to eliminate the dependance on foreign oil.

Yeah but isn't the benefit only shorterm? what about the implications of draining natural resources for future generation. I feel like this type of mentality is a core difference between the left and right. To me the right seems like it has lack of concern with the future, because it tries to conserve the past too much. Environmental issues, drilling, pollution are of little concern. Most of the focus is on making money, and in my view, money aint everythin.

Environmental issues are driven by the extremists. I can cite you instances where junk science was used and the legislators bought into it. There are reasons to control things for the betterment of our environment. It just a matter of degree.

Yes, you're exactly right, it is short term. But it's also half the problem of our current economic crisis.

You want to know why the vast majority of America stopped spending as much money the past year? Couldn't pay their credit card bills or mortgage payments? Because they were paying $500 monthly gas bills, and when you put that on the lower and middle class, it makes a big difference on budgets. Drilling in our OWN country will help eliminate the dependance on foreign oil, reduce fuel prices, and generally be very good for the economy.

And your argument is a rather mute point anyway. Demand for oil will stay the same whether we drill or not, so we're either using oil from the middle east, or we're using our own oil. I'd rather use our own oil.

I mean, you can talk about conserving natural resources all you want, but if we never use them, what good does it do us? Besides, it's obvious the transformation to electric and non-fossil fuels is happening, so why not use the remainder while it'll still do us some good? Billions of gallons of unused oil isn't going to do us any good 50 years down the road when very little uses it.
