Yes your parents should be doing whatever they can to give you the best education they can. Good exam results generally = most options in the rest of your life. You're getting education handed to you on a plate right now. Don't fuck it up so that you regret it, and trust me, you will, by ending up a 20-30 something year old working in McDonalds and wanting to take exams again but now being in a position where you have the time or money to do it. Your parents are doing what they do because they want the best for you. Although you don't see it now, you will when you are older and the fact is you don't know it all and your parents have a lot more wisdom than you to decide what's best for you.

I learned the Quadratic Formula this week in math, and in reality, I didn't learn shit.

For ax2 + bx + c = 0, the value of x is given by:

Guys, be honest, have you ever been somewhere and said, "Damnit! If only I could remember that Quadratic Formula, I wouldn't be in this situation!".

You're right because that's not the quadratic formula. You gave a quadratic equation. Close but not quite.

But you miss the point of learning things like this. I thought the same thing until I got to some of my education classes in college. It's not always what you learn but the process of learning it. Going through that process can develop skills that you may need later. I teach three year olds and having them color is a huge skill builder. Why? They start holding the crayon/marker/whatever between their fingers instead of their fist and get the fine and gross muscles used to make certain movement. Both of those skills are very important to writing. A lot of people see it as useless (including several parents) but it's one of the most important skills we cover. It's the same thing as you get further along in school, just with harder and seemingly more pointless things.

Of course I think parents should have some rights in their child's education, but then again its not for the education aspect, its for the work ethic aspect. I think it is at least important to get a high school education, be it through traditional high school, vocational school, or even GED. If your kid isn't the best in school, I'm not sure punishment is best, but trying to help them maybe. Find out what he or she is good at, get him or her into a program that can hone in on the kids strengths, not weaknesses. I was always a good student who didn't need much pressure (didn't need to study either) so my parents didn't have to be as pressure-minded, but they still were. I'm kind of glad for that. At the same time I think a lot of types of education are worthless. If a parent is paying for private school, or college, or something to that effect, they do have some sort of right over their child, but if the child is attending on his or her will, the parents really shouldn't be able to say anything. Also, at least until the child is an adult parents do have the authority, but beyond 18, that child needs to make his or her own choice.
