This morning at 5am over 500 police in riot gear from cities all over central California brutally attacked the Occupy Oakland encampment at 14th & Broadway. The police attacked the peaceful protest with flash grenades, tear gas, and rubber bullets after moving in with armored vehicles. Apparently the media was not allowed in to document this repression, and the police established barricades as far apart as 11th and 17th. Over 70 people were arrested and the camp gear was destroyed and/or stolen by the riot police.
Contact the mayor and tell her what you think of her actions.
Reconvene today at 4pm at the Oakland Library on 14th & Madison. Occupy Oakland is not finished, it has only begun.

What do you think of this? They're going to reoccupy tomorrow or maybe they already have.

I think it's fucking disgusting. They shot someone in the face with a rubber bullet and then threw a fucking flash grenade into the crowd of people that went over to check on the person to make sure they were okay.

That's fucking horrible IMO. I don't know the specifics that led up to that person being shot, but that cop is pretty trashy to have done that.

If authorities didn't do things to make us question our government there would be no need for this shit. You cannot shut up the public at large.

Unfucking believeable. Asshole cop tosses a tear gas grenade over a barracade as people try to help former Marine Scott Olsen, who had just been shot in the face with a "non-lethal" projectile by another cop. I'm sorry, but these city mayors , police cheifs and cops are out of control. Criminal and civil charges should be brought against all who were videoed abusing American citizens. This really fucking sucks to see this shit happening in my own country.

I said three years ago there was going to be more war in our streets and those fuckers are just proving it.
I can't believe they went to this amount of force!

If I said it once I said it 100 times, if your going downtown to protest, make sure you tote your AR with you.

Oh, wait a minute, don't all those "big" cities have hard anti gun laws:p

Have 1,000 law abiding citizens gather together to to promote an open carry law while their open carrying, I can't help but wonder if the police would take the same kind of action.

Accountable will say they shouldn't have broken the law and it's the protesters fault since this wasn't the tea party.

So how is it that one group is getting beat up and others not?

There is a way to protest without getting the cops pissed off.

Lots of Nam rallies were peaceful yet some were violent. When you have a large group of people facing a small group of police and the police have never experienced that before it is a recipe for disaster.

So what went wrong?

I have not paid real close attention but was it in Oakland where the cops were shot with paintballs?

Not saying that justifies an extreme response. Just trying to get a perspective on what triggered this.

Oakland has a history of police brutality. Fuck most of the urban California has a history of police brutality and crooked cops.

You could say that about almost any big city though.

Protesters also have a history of inciting violence.

See what we have here?

Again I would like to know what leads up to the violence. Trust me both the police and protesters in the past have been at fault.

Which goes back to one of my early comments in another thread that the protesters need to be careful not to incite anything or even come close to it.

Because they will lose credibility if they do.

non-violent protesters were being forcibly removed from the park with riot police. What do you think might happen?
Do you think that the law created that states you can't be in the park over night was put in place to keep citizens from staging a protest or do you think it was more about keeping vagrants from shacking up there?

Take my little town of Allentown. There are laws on the books that say that you cannot be where our protesters are over night. But the mayor decided that as long as they are peaceful they can stay. They are not hurting anyone and certain laws should b over looked since it is a constitutional guarantee that we are free to peaceably assemble. That right should trump a silly no over nighting in a park law. A law by the way that is only punishable by a fine... where do riot police come into play.

Not to mention that in each of these cities that evict the protesters... they throw all of their belongings away, compact them in the back of a garbage truck. Tents, food, bikes, computers, everything... really? Is it necessary?

Actually you were. I'm 50 minutes from Easton and 20 minutes from Allentown... But there aren't going to be any protesters in the middle of the woods.

Considering due east of Reading, Pa has at least 700 square miles, being off 40 miles or so statistically speaking would probably still put me up there.
