I am grilling hamburgers & deer sausage today for my mother and sister.
The Sister in Law & Brother in law are making roast and potatoes & carrots for tomorrow when we gather. Are you doing traditional or not and is your traditional different than turkey and ham & such?

Re: Non-tradtional Christmas food.

I'm going to my folks, and I suspect we are having turkey and ham. Nothing exciting, lol.

Personally, I'd like venison or something interesting. Maybe pheasant. :D

Re: Non-tradtional Christmas food.

I dont do much of a tradition... because having xmas at summer plus in another country plus my husband from another part of Greece... we mostly do seafood, souvlakia and some other stuff .. that best for summer
.. from where i am originaly from we do yaprakia ...it is stuffed cabbage with rice (other parts do this too but not the way we do)
and like in all Greece we do eat pork at xmas and Lamb at Easter lol

here so information from online for yaprakia

It wouldn't be Christmas in Kozani (and other cities in Northern Greece) without stuffed cabbage! In other parts of Greece we may call these lahanodolmades (cabbage dolmades) or lahanophylla yemista (stuffed cabbage leaves), but up north, they're yiaprakia (γιαπράκια, say: yah-PRAHK-yah) and they are never missing from the Christmas table.

The traditional Kozani version is made with toursi lahano - cabbage that has been soaked in brine for 6 weeks - and ground pork.

Re: Non-tradtional Christmas food.

We do the traditional turkey dinner for supper. Every Christmas for lunch mom also makes waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. :D:thumbup

Re: Non-tradtional Christmas food.

We're having ham, beans, and funeral potatoes as always at my Aunt's house.
Tomorrow we will do...ham, mashed, and...funeral potatoes at home :s

Salt and carbs, anyone?

What is a funeral potato? That's a new one for me :)

I really wanted to make that creamed cauliflower mash for boxing day but my mum vetoed it :(

We haven't done the traditional Christmas dinner for probably 15 years or so now. We do steak, twice-baked potatoes (except those of us on a diet have baked sweet potatoes instead), and a big salad.

We're not very traditional - partially because before we moved to Germany we always ended up at the in-laws OR goat roped into some other crazy family shit... so, we've been a bit different this year.

For this evening (Christmas Eve), I made pan-seared sea scallops as an appetizer with a very nice Blanc Bordeaux. Husby made a spicy shrimp stir-fry with sweet onions, red peppers, grilled pineapple and a sweet/spicy citrus sauce. Plenty of expresso and pastry for dessert.

For Christmas Day, I'll start out with breakfast and make crepes stuffed with fresh banana and strawberries, crispy bacon, and yoghurt. We have a turkey breast that we've brined, and husby is going to smoke that for a couple of hours. I'm making individual ramekins of potato au gratin, along with a spicy sausage dressing, green salad, and home-baked baguette with whipped butter. Southern Comfort pound cake is for dessert.

We love to cook and this is the second year where we have been able to stay home and do our own thing. When we move back to the States, we will (thankfully) be too far away from the in-laws to visit over the holidays. So I anticipate being able to do what WE want instead of fumble-fucking around with people I don't want to run in to at a store - nevertheless spend my whole holiday with!!!
