NHL playoff thread

Great offensive teams do not always make it in the playoffs. The game tightens up so much and you don't see many high scoring games. So Washington was ripe for the pickings. This is what makes the playoffs so great. You never know how a team will do in them. In addition you can have a team barely squeak thru a series and look totally beatable and then the next series they look unbeatable

Go figure

And enjoy

what about Gretzky's teams of the 80s? they were all finesse....

I think the difference is that the Oilers never took anyone for granted..

The Crapitals walked into the Montreal Bell Centre ( new forum ) and thought, hey this is a cake walk.. Especially when they got to 3-1 in games.. NEVER let your guard down and the Crapitals did.. Now they are golfing with Miller and company.. :D

how can you ( the Crapitals) be that cocky? so wrong....kind of like the Russians in the 1980 Olympic hockey

Oh but they had some grit also

And I was making a generalization

Of course there are finesse teams that play well at times in the playoffs.

Just that todays playoff most games are tight checking and there is not a lot of open ice like the regular season.

The Oilers of that day had Mark Messier, not exactly a guy to be pushed around on the ice and one who would gladly give a punch for Gretzky.. Not to say 3/4 of the rest of the team would not do the same..

I remember watching Mario playing and he never seemed to get into the fray in the front of the net until it was necessary. always playing near the blue line waiting for the breakaway.....
He never used his size much to his advantage. I think Datsuyk has more grit in that way. Not that Mario was a worse player. He might have had the best hands of all time. He was strong but never was much for checking as I recall.

Semin pulled a fantastic disappearing act in the playoffs once again. He's pretty good at that. :D

So...what you're saying is, Semin was shooting blanks. ;)

If you play your balls off, win the President's Trophy and then are eliminated in Round 1, what have you REALLY accomplished?

I kind of liked this little commentary and while yes, we all realize that's not really them on the Segways...there you go: http://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/B...Man-Who-Wasn-rsquot-There-AO-Gets-KO-rsquoed/

see, I think Messier learned from Gretzky to be a captain of the team; yes he had the demeanor of the "melt steel with his eyes"and when he beat my Bruins in 1990 he won the cup without Gretzky and it didn't seem like it was his team. When he went to the Rangers in 94/95 he knew his mission..

The problem I see with kids on the ice today is that many are not willing to be part of the "team".. I watched the Crapitals and instead of passing Ovy would take the puck himself and try to do it all.. Even Gretzky passed the puck to others but Mario and Ovy don't do that often enough..

Radio commentators had a good chuckle at the TV guy's expense when H.Sedin / Canucks won the top goal scorer for this year saying he didn't deserve the title because many of his goal points were 2nd goal assists and those shouldn't count..

Why does it matter where H.Sedin's points come from if its all fair for all players ?
