On an acer i think its f10 if that dont work then try alt and f10...you then want to select something that says factory image or similar.

You want to try this factory recover first...if you use a windows disk,,you ruin the factory mbr .and you wont be able to use f10 in the future...also a windows disk does not have the drivers you will need..but if you do the factory recovery you will not have to put them on
So are you saying his 3 year old Acer had a recovery partion to bring it back to factory restore? Like Dells do? And all it takes is getting into F10?

Just remember that if you do this, it will reset the computer to factory settings and you will lose EVERYTHING, all programs, pictures, files, documents, etc. You will be left with a computer just like it was brand new. So you need to save all that information first.

Ok how do I save all of his pictures to disk? I have 2 DVD-R 120 minute disks. If you can explain it to me I would greatly appreciate it Tim. :) And we want to get rid of ALL the programs on there that he added. It's an Acer Aspire 5570Z if that helps.

Depends. How far can you get into booting up windows?

Yes it is pretty standard to have a recovery partition.....On acers it is hidden and unviewable.
You may be able to see it under disk management....but it is just as easy to give the f10 a try....or the alt f10 ....last one i messed with was f10.
It took a while to complete the recovery {over an hour} but then it was just like the day itwas bought when finished.

I then go get all windows updates before doing anything else...before even opening internet explorer etc or even getting an anitvirus.......the reason I say this is because the windows updates plug security holes....you wont get a virus unless you hit a malicious site or download something

The updates take a long time........but it is best to just get it over with,if you dont then when you go to shut down etc it may be in the middle of updating...once in a while this can cause a problem....vista has a service pack 2 out and then many updates after that..some can take a while and a few can cause a problem if the unit is shit down during the process of a few certain updates.

If you want to save all your pictures etc...the easiest way is to make a new folder and copy everything you want to keep to that folder...when you have the folder ready then burn that folder to a disk

I want to look for it there but I don't know much about Vista. How do I get to Disk Management to look if it's there or not?

So I can just move ALL the pics into another folder? Then burn it?

Control panel /admin tools/ computer management/storage / disk management

It still may not show up though......Acer hides it for its own protection and to make letter assignment a breeze

Thats how I would do it.except i would copy them rather than move them..that way when you go to copy them to a disk its very easy.
Just consider your "new folder" the project ...then when the project is complete then you can burn it to a disk

Ok I'll check that out later. If not I'll try the F10 or ALT- F10...Thanks!

Sounds like it's going to be a hell of a project. There's tons of pictures that he wants saved on that PC. :willy_nilly:

Even when they are hidden you can tell because you will have less available room on your disk. Example; you computer has a 40GB drive but you only have access to 32GB. That shows you that 8GB has been partitioned off and hidden

I just took an old Dell hard drive and formatted it to use as a spare, I had to unlock the partition at the command prompt just to delete it. I wasn't even able to access it through Fdisk

Welcome.
Its pretty easy...just highlight everything you want to copy over ...or you can copy and paste entire folders.

I would open the Picture folder highlight everything inside then copy that to the new folder.

Then open the new folder and delete the sample pictures etc out of it..or anything else a person doesn't want .

If one makes any mistakes the original pictures folder is still as it was :)

The recovery process is also fairly easy...just time consuming

that is very typical to have a restore partition
instead of discs

however someone after you do a restore their will be some some preinstalled software to
create restore discs if it asks you to create cd-r or DVD choose dvd
Better to have one or two dvds than 10 cd-rs

usually you can look up the model of the computer and find a spec sheet
online that will tell you how to do all of this

screw windows
install linux its free

True....but windows is very user friendly and actually very durable.
Power mgt ,system restore as well as several years of support...I think W2K either just ended support or are getting ready to,for example.
An almost endless supply of apps as well. ;)
