My roomies computer got severely infected and we need a Windows Vista Home Premium Disk OEM is what the tag says I think. Where's the cheapest place to buy one? I tried Walmart but they want over $100...way over $100! The computer has to be reformatted and he never made a disk for it. :spank: Bad Chris!

I had someone help me and found

Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 Upgrade [OLD VERSION]

A Used one for $66.50 on Amazon.com. Would any of you buy that? Should I go that route cuz money is very tight right now. Is there anything wrong with used? Will this disk work for reformatting?

If not where the heck can I find a cheap Windows Vista Home Premium Disk so we can have it reformatted? Thanks to whoever can help us. :)

I don't see any issues, but if you have concerns call Microsoft about the License.. They will tell you if there will be a problem..

What do you mean by that? Can I call Microsoft and give them the number on the Operating System tag that's on the laptop? And what can they do?

Where did he get the laptop ?

He may be able to call them and get a replacement disc for $25.00.. They will not send him a key code but he will just need to provide his Laptop serial number and stuff...

He bought it at BestBuy 2-3 years ago. And he has the key code tagged on the back of the laptop. It's an Acer. And the serial numbers are still on the computer too.

I don't know if it's on there. There are hundreds of pages, but I don't see it on the first page so I'd say your best bet would just be to call and request a disk since you have a key already.

I just downloaded a torrent of an .iso image of Vista Premium 32-bit... my copy only came with the 64-bit DVD and not the 32-bit, but it was licensed for it. So I just downloaded the image file, burned it onto a DVD, and went on my way.

www.torrentz.com

Shouldn't be illegal at all or anything like that, since you're just downloading the image file and not a hacked version of the OS itself. Microsoft will charge you for it, at least in my experience... and they don't offer a download, just that you can buy a DVD that they'll mail to you.

Many acers.dells etc that were made in the last few years have a recovery partition..you access this by the f buttons during startup..On an acer i think its f10 if that dont work then try alt and f10...you then want to select something that says factory image or similar.
Sometimes this gets hosed if the factory mbr is damaged {by a windows repair}usually and f10 wont be available.
Do not interrupt the recovery once it begins..there will appear to be times its not doing anything,,just wait it out...forcing a shut off creates quite the nighmare to deal with...just keep waiting

You want to try this factory recover first...if you use a windows disk,,you ruin the factory mbr .and you wont be able to use f10 in the future...also a windows disk does not have the drivers you will need..but if you do the factory recovery you will not have to put them on

Erm, you have to go to the manufacturer of the computer and ask them if it came ready installed on a computer.

The OEM came preloaded. He never made a copy of anything on his computer. It's going to be completely empty of programs once this is done. I'm calling microsoft now to see how nice I can be in asking for one or downloading one. :)

My mom has an acer that didnt come with disks ..it prompted the user to make them...but the recovery partition still worked;)
Almost all units made in the last few years have a recovery partition..its a very painless way to reformat:)

Believe this Acer does not give ANY disks when you buy 1 of their laptops! Chris just never got around to making a Windows Disk or the chipset and drivers etc. etc. etc...I just bought an Acer laptop in April and I backed everything up on disks except windows. That I have to buy a Flash Drive to do. I want mine on Flash. It came with NO disks...

So I called Microsoft and they said to call Acer and even had their number! Talked to Acer and they can't give me a recovery disk cuz the computer is just 1 darn month over 3 years old.

This is what Acer is offering. For $99 they will walk me through getting rid of the viruses or they will walk me through a reformat and even tell me how to back up his stuff. I think if I do this for him for Christmas I will just ask them to walk me through the reformat and not even mess with trying to get rid of several Rogue Programs that snatched up his laptop.

SO how would you do it? Would it cost more if I took it into the local shop without disks.
