you know photo teachers cram that rule of thirds down your throat, but it's kind of old

that's why there's just always something about a photo or piece of art that's centered.

For the most part I try to follow the rule of thirds. But even more importantly than that is drawing you eye to the subject and not off the print. This rule is more important that any other because if your eye is drawn away from the subject and off the page, it just looks off.
But as with every rule, there are times you need to break them for you vision.

Well for the most part it is the right way to compose a picture... It is important to know and use, but like I said earlier, there are definitely times to break from that rule.

I know of the rule, but I don't think about it. I just go with what looks good to me from a compositional perspective. If it so happens that it follows the rule of thirds, so be it but I don't go looking to follow it. In hindsight, some pictures I would have done differently but there are not too many in that category.

I compose and / or crop according to my taste and if someone doesn't like my shot then so be it.

It's not about following the rules, it's all about your pictures and if they do what you want them to do.
But the rule of thirds is good for young inspiring photographers to learn and practice. Then let them loose to do as they please.
I have seen some good photographers who took beautiful shots, shots that could have been amazing if they were composed a little better... Like it or not, composition is a huge part of the picture.

Easy big guy, nobody is criticizing anyone's pictures here... It's just a conversation and I was only pointing out that it is a good thing for new photographers to learn... that's all.

I know and I'm not getting defensive about it. I just stated my side of things.

I am somewhat perplexed as to why Tuffy felt he had the need to critique your pic though especially when you stated the reason you took it. Oh well as they say.

The rule is a nice thing to be aware of - as long as the newbie photographer is not told that it must be adhered to and imho, should only be advised to follow that rule if they are looking for direction and advice with composition. At least until they get more confident with composing shots with/without the rule.

What was your uncropped pic like Tim? As per Ian, I'm looking forward to the end result.

The piccy Tuffy linked - crystal clear and sharp but far too close to the corner. IMHO.

My only reason for this moon shot was to find the limitations of my camera. I wasn't attempting to take a good keepable picture. I only wanted the full moon and I wanted to see how clear of a picture my camera could take. Plus as anyone who has attempted a picture of the moon will know, getting the exposure right is near impossible.
My full size picture has nothing but more black sky around it.

You need to remember, my camera is purely made for HD video and really doesn't have many settings for manual pictures.

this rule of thirds thing is pointless really on something like the moon,the solitary focus of the shot is one object,the rest being black,so central can actually work
