A lot of it is really sad and moving. I remember the first time I saw that dog laying by his owner's casket...uuuuuughhhhhhh so freaking sad I had to kind of rush past it this time.

imo there aren't a lot of great pics there that would qualify as the most powerful images of 2011 except for anything to do with nature. eg: The shot of the group of people awaiting word on Osama. If a person didn't know what it was about they would just think it was a bunch of people in a room... big deal. The volcano on the other hand.... that's a powerful photo.
