I agree that for quite a few of the pictures you need to know the story behind it for it to have an impact. So maybe it should be called 'Most powerful moments of 2011' and not pictures :p

You could argue you have to know the context behind anything for it to be comprehended....

One flew over the cuckoos nest would fly over everyone's heads if people didn't know the context

imo there aren't a lot of great pics there that would qualify as the most powerful images of 2011 except for anything to do with nature. eg: The shot of the group of people awaiting word on Osama. If a person didn't know what it was about they would just think it was a bunch of people in a room... big deal. The volcano on the other hand.... that's a powerful photo.
:shesaid (where is the "im with homo" pic??)

I mean, it has the friggin context below it...they recognize that is needed, and the the fusion of context and photo is what they consider powerful.

:homo: The volcano pic is my favourite from that bunch.

The one that hit me the hardest was the before and after shot of Joplin, Missouri. Complete and utter destruction. Wow.

That's true but we are talking about pictures here. A powerful picture doesn't need a caption or words beneath it to describe what's going on. The picture by itself it will tell the story.
