TOMBALL, Texas -- Karen McAdams is a single mom who is having a tough time raising what she calls a rebellious 15-year-old daughter.
The Tomball mom showed us condom wrappers and drug paraphernalia she said she found in her daughter's bedroom a couple of weeks ago.
McAdams punished the teen with a spanking.
"And I grabbed her off the bed to whup her, and I grabbed her back to me, and then I whuped her again," McAdams said.
The single mom said she considered it a routine spanking on the rump for a child who had been in and out of trouble for years.
"I didn't do anything wrong," McAdams said.
But after interviewing the daughter, Tomball police saw things differently.
They said the girl told a different story and a small bruise matched her version of what happened.
After consulting with the district attorney's office, police arrested McAdams.
"And until the entire investigation was concluded, that's when the arrest took place," said Tomball Police Department Capt. Rick Grassi.
McAdams was booked and processed at the Harris County Jail, where she would spend the next three days.
She is still convinced her rights as a mother were stripped away.
"If the police get involved, then you're the one who gets in trouble -- not your child," McAdams said.
According to 11 News legal expert Gerald Treece, the law protects parents who spank their children, but not parents who commit abuse.
"And so the question becomes reasonableness. Was the corporal punishment administered reasonably," Treece said.
CPS has temporarily placed the 15-year-old girl with a relative.
"And she's not here. That's the hardest part," McAdams said.

While I do agree with the fact that spanking a 15 year old is a bit... well, ineffective, I don't think the daughter is a saint either. They both obviously need help.

If the daughter had gotten into "trouble" (police or whatever) the mum would've been hauled over the coals for NOT disciplining or having control over her child

Teens have WAY too many rights over parent these days, and whilst I dont condone what the mum did, I CAN sympathise with her.

You're dang right about that. Now she'll think she can walk all over her mother. :\

It's hard to tell from the article whether the mom got out of hand. I have no problem with spanking, though I doubt I'll ever spank my own children when I have them. But abuse, that's horrible. Since the article doesn't reveal what actually happened, I'm disinclined to have an opinion on the matter. Not that my opinion really matters anyhow... ok I'm rambling. Done.

I see nothing wrong with spanking children, even if she was 15. My last one, I was 13 and it was only the end because I was a smart butt about and asked my mother if it was supposed to hurt.

I know a man who spanked his kids until they were out of high school. His son with a shoe. He wasn't very big and his son was huge. I think that was the one way for it to be felt. :dunno:

HOWEVER- it goes beyond acceptable if you leave a mark on the child, aside from a red patch. Bruises are a big no-no!

Hell I would have taken the little trouble maker down to JDC and placed her myself. That's freaking pathetic. Kids are getting to out of control today.

I do believe 15 is to old to spank, but she's lucky that's all that happened.

I read a similar story. A couple were arrested because their two sons took a small slap out of proportion and lied to police about severe abuse. The couple was arrested and such.

Seriously, if the kids acting up and won't even fight back or leave, it's okay to give them "a small bruise".

And is that the clincher with you all? A bruise? That's the difference between abuse and non-abuse? There's an easy way to remedy that. Electroction and genital play.

Exactly. Though we don't know the details on this particular case, it seems sometimes people jump to the abuse conclusion a little too quickly. That's what police investigators are for though.

I don't know. Maybe the article is biased, but I'm on the daughter's side and I think people don't spank their children often enough. Or rather that enough people don't spank their children.

Well, I'm sure the daughter minded the bruises a little more than the Mom did.

I'm not sure it wasn't abuse, it's just when I hear of a kid willing enough to run right to the cops and get her Mom busted, I sorta think that kid coulda used that will just to make her Mom one iota happier in this worls and avioded the whole thing.
