'Mean mom' sells son's car after misdeed

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.
"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"
The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.

Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week — just for the feedback.

Anyways...I followed the link to this thread from the PJ's mom thread and wanted to add my 2 cents....

The mom did the right thing in getting rid of the car. She took a very strong stand when her rules were broken and thats a good thing. :thumbup

The only thing that I dislike is that she took out an ad to tell everyone what her son had done. Think about it....what was the point? Kids make mistakes...he could have drank and driven but he didnt...disaster was avoided so the ad was unnecessary. Yeah, he broke the rules about booze in the car and that in of itself warrants having the car taken away, but public humiliation too? I dont agree with that. :thumbdown

I believe in handling discipline privately, firmly and lovingly. Guess thats why the ad bothers me so much.

True. But still...its worth the trouble to make sure that he is safe if she is doubting his judgment! :)

Personally, I would have taken the car off the road and canceled the insurance for 6 months to get my point across. With it off the road, I wouldnt be tempted to hand the keys over in a weak moment of motherly love, lol. I also wouldnt want the hassle of having to find another car again when it was time to trust him with it once more. But thats just me....the mom in the article must not have minded the inconvenience of that.
 
Id be Pissed!!!!... i used to drink under age so what.. maybe its a cultural thing.. my parents werent to bothered as long as i was safe about it.. was deffo allowed to drink int he house.. if hes not drink driving then shit.. thats a bit too far.. imo
