I think as a rule, people identify more with a good underdog story or someone that tries their damndest even if they don't win. I've noticed that people like to watch someone come up...take Becks for example... people loved watching him come up but then he became famous, they named a movie after him and he was seen as a prat. When fame takes hold, the masses get pissed off because suddenly there is a disconnect between us and them.

We have that here too...we hate the Yankees because they are good and have the most talented players...people hold a grudge and say "oh it's because they can afford to buy their team, blah blah." Well of course if you have the money, you're going to buy the best for the job. Me personally, I know I would much rather watch an underdog team play its guts out and take a championship...I can't say as I turn my back on a winner unless they do something stupid like shoot themselves in the leg because they were hiding a concealed weapon in their sweats... :p

I think it all boils down too the fact that we relate more to the common man.

Hey, Peter, not really sports related, but a comment on the British loser mentality. It's born through your history. The Brits have a long history of being counted out, but never give in or admit defeat. The Battle of Britain is a classic example. It's part of the culture. Like you said, it's in your nature.

"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense." - Sir Winston Churchill

He already appolgised, dude. Personally I find it a bit of a fuss over nothing. People call Irish people, Paddies in an affectionate way and they dont get offended and neither was this Asian guy. Harry has put his life on the line fighting at the fronts until some twatty Australian gave his whereabouts away placing all Allied forces in danger. Yeah, he can be a bit of a twat at times but he fought for our country. That takes greater precedence over him being a bit un PC to a guy who didn't mind, the army is full of tough, brave men who easily shake off a bit of non PC humour.

Hey man, it wasn't just 'some' twatty Australian that give his location away. It was THE twatty Australian that did it.

That twatty Australian being some twat journalist at the 'The Australian' newspaper. Which, unsuprisingly enough, is a newspaper whose staff and readership are entirely composed of twats.
