I think as a rule, people identify more with a good underdog story or someone that tries their damndest even if they don't win. I've noticed that people like to watch someone come up...take Becks for example... people loved watching him come up but then he became famous, they named a movie after him and he was seen as a prat. When fame takes hold, the masses get pissed off because suddenly there is a disconnect between us and them.
We have that here too...we hate the Yankees because they are good and have the most talented players...people hold a grudge and say "oh it's because they can afford to buy their team, blah blah." Well of course if you have the money, you're going to buy the best for the job. Me personally, I know I would much rather watch an underdog team play its guts out and take a championship...I can't say as I turn my back on a winner unless they do something stupid like shoot themselves in the leg because they were hiding a concealed weapon in their sweats...
I think it all boils down too the fact that we relate more to the common man.
