Well the fact we don't know why the police office was there would be my first question..

Was he there because of these kids actions who decided to tape this store, hence he had reason to be upset, had they stolen something or cause damage prior ?

Why did the kid go back and video tape him after the first time he asked him to stop, full picture, on purpose ?

We don't know if the other kids in the background of this video had anything on them as all we could see was the police officer ?

That's just my starting points.. More Java coming up.. :D

1. It is standard practice to have an off duty police officer at Walmart, especially in the side of town that is described in the video.
2. Not so sure about the previous action that took place there as it appears it wasn't video'd
3. Not known as of this time the kid isn't coming forth and saying what happened before... in the video it appears he is making a shitty attempt at making a reason for teh video when the other dude walks into the shot to talk about something related to the carts in the parking lot.

My whole thing is, whatever happened before the video these jerks are smart mouthing the cop and not complying to the officer's request to surrender a form of ID. in addition one of the kids also puts his hands on the cop... which that alone can be deemed as assault.

These kids are a perfect example of what things have come to with regard to disrespect to law enforcement personnel... and the worse thing about it is that if he had indeed done anything to these kids out of fear for his life or their defiant attitude or lack of compliance he would have been crucified as a racist cop.

where did it become ok to talk back, to lay your hands on, or even to argue over what his reasoning behind demanding proof of ID to an officer of the law?

I agree.. But how many kids have a clean mouth today ??

The only thing I would point out is that kids here often do not yet have ID or carry it around.. The law is they do not require to have it as minors ( under the legal age ) to have ID on them but can be brought home to their legal custodians to identify / prove custody.

The teens (I think they were teens) were definitely pushing the line and they were being disrespectful.

The cop should have told them to move along and not loiter in front of the store.

Here's my problem with this... The cop came into this with attitude, I'm not sure if there was something that happened prior that isn't shown on the video but I am only commenting on what I saw.
Next, the cop has no right to ask for ID. If these teens were not doing something illegal or suspected of doing something illegal than the officer has absolutely no right to ask for ID. And they had every right to refuse to show any.

The teens were acting like punks
The cop over reacted and made the situation worse. It could have been handled much better IMO

Fuck da po-lice.

Seriously - the cops a fucking moron. He had zero reason to confront those kids. Just because some asshat cop doesn't like someones "attitude" does not giive them the right to hassle people.

And it's really fucked up that so many Americans are so willing to give away their civil rights by supporting cops acting like this simply because they think those kids were "punks" and deserved it.

Oh - and cops don't seem to like being filmed. Tough shit on that. The video camera can be the great equalizer for citizens facing abusive, egotistical cops behaving badly.

That is VERY true ... the moment anyone even remotely suggests that "people should not be ALLOWED to film police" is going to be a VERY scary and bad moment.

teh_fuzz says he was Off Duty.. If so is he an employee of Walmart at this point ?

Also if someone came and filmed at my place of business for no reason I could ask them for the video if they were on my property..

There was a reason why those kids were there taping that from a Cell Phone..

I never agree with police abusing their power, but this video made me wonder a hell of a lot, as these kids seemed way to ready for the consequences of the events..

I didn't watch the clip because my internet sucks, but I see both sides of this issue. On one hand, cell phone footage can bring shady cops to justice. On the other hand, just like anything, it can be used as harassment and abused. Kids will whip out the cellphones just to annoy the cop and rebel against authority. Regardless of their job, nobody would want someone to follow them around with a camera so that they could catch them fuck up and put it on the internet. It's borderline harassment.

I agree that following an officer around with a camera would be "over doing it" ... I guess I was thinking more along the lines of having a law come out that specifically says, "The video taping of law officials is illegal" ... or something along those lines.

One of the best time I think that video cameras are great to have around is during protests ... already we have witnessed police act out of line with protestors (even if they are a pain in the ass)

ALSO, it can help police officers that are attacked. I remember seeing a protest video in which a guy just punches a police officer right in the face ... he would have totally have got away with it too if it wasn't on film since everyone who witnessed it said it didn't happen.

Common courtesy can go a long way, even with a police officer.

Chances are those kids never had a father around to discipline them when they needed it.

Don't get me wrong, some cops can be in the wrong, but it seems with today's kids, there is NO respect for law enforcement.

As noted, no way of knowing what happened BEFORE the video was shot.

Actually, some LEO's in Greensboro were awarded $1,000,000 each (5 of them) because some rapper videoed them in a store and made it out to look like he was being "wrongly" arrested where it wasn't the case and included it in a rap video of some sort that he marketed. This rapper lost the second time in court and it looks like he is out of options other than to pay.

Those kids were just making a goof-off video in the Walmart parking lot. Had nothing to do with the off duty cop on the Walmart payroll.

Really much ado about nothing. If the dumbass cop would have just watched, the kids would have made their silly little video to post on youtube and that would have been the end of it.

Got a link to that story?

I would agree with the judge in that case then. To falsely portray something like that and try to pass it off as reality, while damaging the characters of the police officers, is wrong.

According to the law in the state of tx, if these kids dont have id then they should not be out as late as it is in the video.
