I've also been looking around for a laptop or netbook for my son. We checked the netbooks at bestbuy and the letters/numbers on the keyboard are way too crammed up, it'll take one forever to type. We're going for a notebook/ small sized laptop instead. We saw a good deal for $489 @ QVC with 3 easy payment plan- Acer brand. My dentist and some friends swear by the quality of this brand. The former has tablet, laptop and desktop all Acer at his clinic.

Am not sure if you'd wanna go for payment plans as you have to add additional for interest of course. But there is also a 15.6" Toshiba for $429 and a Dell 10.1 for $424 with 5 easy payment plans

Good luck :)

Hmm, I'm reading lots of good reviews about Acer laptops and the prices are pretty low!

We gave our 13 yr old daughter an Acer netbook for Christmas a few years ago and she hasn't killed it yet.
That's saying a lot.

Other than the lack of an optical drive, the biggest differences between a netbook and a laptop are keyboard size(netbooks are pretty small), screen size(older folks might find them hard to read from), and processing power(netbooks dont crunch as fast).

I personally prefer a laptop over a netbook but if you want small and easily portable then they aint so bad.

if you need a laptop just for those things just get one with at least a duo core processor or i3 (these are intel... not familiar with AMD :p). 2-4GB RAM and around 128 MB video card (AT LEAST... most have 256 thou). Through friends i heard toshibas and hp laptops are most durable where as acer are often complained as breaking down early (then again acers are often cheaper laptops).

Check out tiger direct or neweggs as they often sell laptops cheaper than futureshop or best buy.

Honestly I would post this question on a forum that strictly is orientated around computers (parts, hardware, etc.) as they are more knowledgable and can help find the perfect laptop

BTW, I have found that you will pay a premium for going to a local place like Office Depot, Best Buy or Staples. I can usually find a better machine for much less on-line. I have bought my last few systems off of TigerDirect and haven't had a single problem... :dunno

That looks perfect!
I haven't used Open Office, but I just download it online? And if I emailed a file I had saved on it, it would load ok on MS word, if I understand you?
Thanks for the help!

I would probably just need to handle any issues with the machine through the manufacturer, eh? Seems ok, I imagine those stores do get profit wherever they can...

Yes, you can open or create any file in either program and it will work the same.
You can go read about it and download it for free at OpenOffice.org

You are correct, you deal directly with the manufacturer if there is a problem. Sometimes they have you take it to a local dealer.

But really, how many times have you ever needed to return electronics? I can't remember ever having to return something.

I still use my 2 year old netbook, a packard bell dot s, still with Win XP.
And it does its job very well. I'm totally satisfied, even if it sometimes has its "crazy 5 minutes". *g*

I for one, wouldn't like to use a laptop, because laptops are too heavy. I dunno what you carry with you throughout days, but let alone my bag with all the stuff I need for my studies reaches a weight of 2,8 kg minimum; my netbook has a weight of exactly 1,2 kg - altogether that makes up a weight of 4 kg.
And I often have an aching neck and shoulders from it.
Imagine now a laptop with more weight...

Btw: just on Saturday I've bought a new netbook, an Acer Aspire One D255E with Win 7 Starter on it (b/c of the already mentioned "crazy minutes" of my netbook). It looked stylish and was cheap.
And guess what, yesterday I gave it back to the dealer. No chance to work with it, everything slow.
At this point I agree with BadBoy: pay attention to RAM and that it is possible to upgrade the netbook. The Acer Aspire One had only 1GB RAM what made it running totally slow, and it wasn't possible to upgrade it (you would have to lever off the keyboard to reach the part where the RAM can be put in oO).

Thanks SC, I don't see myself carrying it around much, it would be for home use.
Luckily this Acer Tim shows has 2GB, but I see what you mean...I'm kinda thinking if this Acer is about as good as a good netbook with a little bit better specs it would be worth it.

I have always been leery of Acers because they seem so shitty lol but I'm seeing a lot of positive feedback (obviously taking the price into consideration, you get what you pay for)

KK, in that case a laptop would be the better choice for you I think. Especially, as netbooks are so tiny with tiny displays (on every website you have to scroll in all directions :D). Netbooks are a good option, if you need something easy to take with you. :)

Just my 2 (or three ?) cents. ;)

Thank you :)
Ya, I just remembered too...in the latter part of my program I have to play CDs of myself counseling people and type what is said in Word. I will need a driver for that! Answered my own question there :p

I have an ASUS UL30A, it has 2Gb memory (upgradable), card reader though only SD cards. Integrated wireless/bluetooth and an Ethernet cable input for wired internet, jacks for headphone and microphone, integrated camera, a 16:9 Widescreen all for £600 (roughly $500)

Also, ten hours of battery life

600 pounds is equivalent to 967 dollars... how did you come up with 500?

I bought the Acer, thanks Tim! Shipping was cheap...I expected like $20 or something...it was $8.97
Hopefully all goes well from here! I may have just stepped out of the 90's with this purchase :24:
