If you ask me (which nobody did), all religions are a little cultish. They all try to get you to believe as soon as possible by teaching you things about their gods while you are young & continue to feed it to you as you grow.

If you question, they will, first off, chastise you, then threaten you (or your family) & then chuck you out, which usually affects your family anyway.

It becomes very difficult to break away from this type of conditioning - even the milder religions - as it is not only personal but it also involves your family & friends.

Much respect Peter & the others that have managed to do this. It is now up to you to make choices about your beliefs that ARE personal & that best fit your life choices. That, in itself, is not an easy task.

i somewhat agree with allan. i think its better to let people make their own choices. i was brought up in a presbyterian church but i have also went to catholic and pentecostal churches. my parents left it up to me even tho they didn't always like my choices for religion to study. i now go to a pentecostal church but they put a lot of pressure on me so i am thinking of leaving that one too. i believe what i believe and thats about it

It's only natural to want to spread your beliefs to your children, but some religions seem to teach intolerance of free-thought. That's when they become a destructive force. Some religions are worse than others. JW's are one of the worst.

Of course they do. Free thought completely undermines religion.

I was baptised in an anglican church, raised in the JW way till i was 14 and now im a Wiccan. My parents left it up too me. I don't think it's right to try and force religion on your children. The choice should be yours not someone elses.

I was never forced to believe anything growing up. Ive questioned the ideal of god/s since i was young(im talking like 11 or 12). Im 20 now and i dont really follow any religion. I have my own ideas about the way i should live and what happens when i die...at this point in my life that enough for me.

I can sympathise with your story a lot, Peter, although I wasn't raised a Jehovah's Witness as such.

My parents brought us up under what is quite an unusual, but fundamentalist variety of Christianity. The interesting quirk was the lack of a church structure, which pretty much meant that this immediate family were the only actual 'members' of this faith I knew.

I broke free at about the age of 15/16 myself, and this is something I have always been grateful to my parents for - even though we still have bitter disagreements to this day, they have (to some degree) respected the decisions I have made, and still accept me without any questions.

Peter, I think that is very sad when churches think they are above god and try to control your own decisions. I know Paul says in the NT to 'prove all things', but unfortunately many Christian denominations see thought and questioning as the enemies of faith.

That's certainly not like any JW's that I've ever heard of .. they don't usually give you the option .. it's either their way or the hiway.

I was raised a Jehovahs Witness and I can definitely say it wasn't left up to me. There is no choice if you live in their house.

My ex g/f's mom is a JW. She didnt force it upon either of her two kids. Kinda surprised me but that just wasnt in her nature.
