The Raw Story | Huckabee: Amend Constitution to be in 'God's standards'

The United States Constitution never uses the word "God" or makes mention of any religion, drawing its sole authority from "We the People." However, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee thinks it's time to put an end to that. "I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."
When Willie Geist reported Huckabee's opinion on MSNBC's Morning Joe, co-host Mika Brzezinski was almost speechless, and even Joe Scarborough couldn't immediately find much to say beyond calling it "interesting,"
Scarborough finally suggested that while he believes "evangelicals should be able to talk politics ... some might find that statement very troubling, that we're going to change the Constitution to be in line with the Bible. And that's all I'm going to say."
Geist further noted of Huckabee that if "someone without his charm," said that, "he'd be dismissed as a crackpot, but he's Mike Huckabee and he's bascially the front-runner."

I have no desire to live in a theocracy, nor do I have a desire to live in a society that goes in the opposite direction of God's law either.

So that gives you the right to radically change the way our society operates for everyone to live under your god's rules?

No, we are a republic - a democracy - it would take more than just me; it would take the majority. And if that is what the majority states, then great. If not, I'd be disappointed, but being in the minority on this if I happen to be will not change my opinion on this issue.

God's law is before the land's law in my life and I will vote accordingly.

I understand that they are not in your life and therefore you will vote accordingly.

To each their own.

C'mon, man! That's not what she was saying. Seriously, you need to stop turning peoples' words around on them. She doesn't have the right to <see above>, she's just giving her opinion, just as you did.

Well, I am very consoled in the fact that this idea would never fly or go through congress in any way. If Huckabee intends on sticking to this issue odds are his chances of getting into the oval office are destroyed completely. Good thing, too.

We have a secularist government that cannot have or endorse any sort of religion. It was set up to be that way for a very good reason.

morals are not exclusive to religion, nor is religion their only source.

Correct, morals are dictated by the majority of the people they influence. So, if the majority of this nation is Christian, or claim to be, then they most likely will agree with a fellow Christian's point of view.

Like all things, there is no guarantee, but I think if a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim and an Atheist were all running for President, the smart money is probably on the Christian winning...it's just a numbers thing.

Yes, but the people that vote for them are not all secularists and will vote for the people that best represent them, their opinions, their views, their morals, and their values.

If Huckabee intends to stick with this issue it is not going to destroy him. It is when he stands up and says things like this that his ratings go up actually. The far left would do well to stop asking him questions about God as they are only shooting themselves in their own feet.

what IS a "christian point of view" exactly? I dare say there isn't a coherent, streamlined christian state of mind that you can identify all Christians by.

This country is mostly Christian, yet our society IS secular, and so is our government. For very good reasons.

True enough, but even if he does get in, I very much doubt he will even go through with this, its most likely lip service to the 30 million evangelicals in this country. Plus congress would shoot it down.

There is no real far left in this country. This country doesn't even know what far left is. I think its funny that people think people like Kucinich are "far left" when he really isn't.

I must say our founding fathers had the right idea when they came up with the concept of the separation of church and state.
