http://www.infowars.com/eagle-scout-facing-expulsion-over-gun-charge/
Eagle Scout Cole Withrow was just a few weeks from graduating with honors from his North Carolina high school, but now the active church member is facing a felony weapons charge and a precarious future after accidentally leaving a shotgun in his pickup truck in the school parking lot.

Most members of the Johnston County community, just southeast of Raleigh believe the 18-year-old is paying far too big a price for an honest mistake.
Do you?

Well as they say rules are rules.
In recent years they have been making a big deal out of firearms on school property.
A couple decades ago this would have been non issue in many areas.

But since he went inside and phoned home to say hey mom...I need help..I forgot I have a shotgun in the truck and I am not allowed to leave according to the rules.
I would let it go as he didnt get "caught" per say.
He wasnt allowed to leave as he already was on school grounds...so he wasnt allowed to drive home drop the gun and return.
Calling mom was his recourse.
This is one of those situations where doing the right thing bites you on the ass...I feel sorry for him.
IMO they need to cut the nuts out of the principal {or who ever}..who was in charge of this decision.

I think it's awful. Had he not been trying to remedy the situation on his own, I'd side w/ the school. But the kid simply forgot and he was trying to get someone to come pick up the weapon instead of just leaving it in his vehicle. So, in effect, he's being punished for trying to do the right thing. Even if you want to suspend him for a little bit and give him a slap on the wrist, fine...but to fuck w/ his graduation is just over the top.

I would even go as far as to keep suspension out of the picture...make him write a 50 page essay on having a cellphone so they cant hear you talk to mom in the office :p

When I was in high school we lived in a rural community. Probably more than half the guys who drove to school deer hunted before school during deer season. The parking lot was full of pick-up trucks with gunracks in the back window with guns in them. I felt far safer then than I feel for kids today who attend school. No student thought it was a good idea to charge into school with a loaded weapon. Some of the teachers had guns in their vehicles as well.

What the news article fails to mention that in the SAME school district a teacher "accidently" left a handgun in her car and that teacher was only suspended for three days and NOT arrested.

I believe rules are rules, however if you're going to make an exception for the teacher, use more common sense and make an exception for the student.

I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance policies. It allows cowards to be in charge, allowing a good future to be seriously damaged while they hide behind the rule book.
This incident can only teach the kids that it is better to hide everything from authorities because no good can come of doing the right thing. It also models the new American norm of doing nothing while your friends or neighbors are unjustly punished by the system.

I say some petition signing is in order...beings they let it slide for staff....I am curious how the teacher was caught ...or what is volunteer like the student.

Going to church means nothing but becoming an Eagle scout tells me something about the young man. The boy called his mom and someone overheard the conversation. The boy was being honest, and it was a mistake.

I can understand the school hanging the boy due to the rule, but if you hang the boy, you should hang the teacher.

Thus why I said time for some petition signing.
If anything staff should receive harsher punishment as they are supposed to know better and they represent the school.....couple to the fact one is an adult the other a kid.

He was trying to do the right thing by calling home. I think they are over-reacting, if they didn't fire the teacher they shouldn't press charges against the student.

Gesture gets high school relay team disqualifiedRunner pointed to sky after winning race

COLUMBUS, Texas (KXAN) - A high school track runner's gesture after winning a race cost his team a trip to the Texas state championship.

Derrick Hayes ran the anchor leg for the Columbus High School 4x100 meter relay team at last weekend's qualifying meet.

After Hayes crossed the finish line in first, his father said the teen pointed toward the sky to show his faith in God.

The move is against the rules for high school sports in Texas. Participants are not allowed to show any excessive "act of celebration".

I agree. The rule has been on the books for years, but I don't know if the pointing gesture has always been interpreted as excessive celebration. Anybody have kids in track or otherwise have insight?

Might be pitiful but if a known rule a selfish act by the runner
Did he think his act was brave or would immediatly change things

I would be pissed at him if I had been in his team

Maybe he didn't think such a small gesture toward his deity (or good weather; who knows?) would be interpreted as taunting the opponent, especially since it is a very common gesture nowadays ..... and it's not taunting the opponent.

I think we need more rules to protect us from ourselves

You're wrong..

The rule was put in place so athletes would stop wasting time and possibly cause harm to others as things started to escalate.

Seeing there is no video of this event I can't comment on this particular call by the judges..

That said if it was as said it would have been totally unfair.

But how many times have referees or judges thrown games / competitions event at State levels ?
