I asked a few people this question in the past, and they emphatically stated that porn was not a form of art in their mind. To me, it kind of does qualify as art. A lot of art is a reflection of the society in which we live in, and porn does that very well too. It inspires you to feel - whether the feeling is arousal, disgust, or sleaze.

So, is porn a form of art?

I think it depends on the actual photos/videos taken. If they are just thrown together, I don't see them as a form of art, but if they are put together/taken like they aren't just thrown together and if there is depth to the photos then, yes, I think they can be art. It's all in the eye of the person looking at it of course.

For a film to be classified as an art form, all it's elements must work together to give sense to something, express a feeling, teach some lesson, entertain and so on. Porn is not a form of entertainment. Rather it's created specifically to erotically arouse people. Since that's it's primary purpose, porn, can't therefore be classified as art.

Pornography comes in various forms, such as real-life videos of persons making love as well as artistic recreations of fictional characters. While it's true that there is erotic arousal in pornography, there is the artistic influence through the drawings created. Sexual arousal is at most incidental, but the artist simply wishes to convey his/her thoughts through the use of the said artwork. Pornography, in the strict sense, is still a form of art, as long as it involves fictional characters. If it involves real-life persons, that is where you draw the line and pornography will not be considered art. In the end, it depends on the preference of the person viewing the said pornographic material as well as the laws of his state.

I would not say it is an art. It is just something that you do and anyone can do. There is nothing creative about it or amazingly great about it. So there is no art to it. Art is meant to get you to a place where you are blow away and in awe of the creator of the art and trying to figure it out, but cant and so you just appreciate it.

Well, I've watched some porno videos entitled X Art. Haha. The creators are bluntly trying to call their films art despite the fact that it's porn. To call it an art? That's a hard call. But let's try to analyze some things - a nude drawing is considered an art. A nude painting is considered an art. And what about something that moves that involves nude bodies? I think it could also be considered art. So, yeah, I think porn can be considered an art. :D

Well I wouldn't consider it art personally but there is plenty of universally excepted art I wouldn't consider
art. Besides I think that if you don't like something don't look at it.
Simple as.

A lot of people were saying that porn wasn't art because it wasn't intended for that purpose. It was intended to get people aroused, and sell a lot of Kleenex tissues lmao. But I disagree. The intention doesn't really matter. The fact that porn is a thing at all, in my opinion, is a representation of the world that we live in today. I bet the life on other planets do not have pornography, and I know that animals don't lol. Porn, is a cultural report of the times that we live in as far as how we value men in comparison to women and all sorts of things.

I think pornography can be turned into art if appropriated the right way... not just random dirty pictures all put up together. Yes, pornography can also be intended to get people aroused but the fact is the human body is indeed a work of art... it's our body and there is nothing wrong with it. It's beautiful. And it can be turned into art. It can be art, but most of the time it isn't. Porn is certainly a form of art, if art is meant in the sense of craft. You could make the case for it also being an applied art (it has the utility of getting you off), and a fine art (it is created for its aesthetics and judged by its beauty). But as art is such a vague term, it's a pretty pointless argument to have unless someone provides a definition.

I think it just depends on the perceiver. Anything can be a piece of art depending on how someone interprets it. Someone may interpret nudity or pornography as bad for many reasons, or they may interpret it artistically.

If you mean internet porn or porno movies then no it is not art. I agree with the people you have talked to, porn videos are intended to get someone aroused, as you said. If you mean a piece of art that has naked bodies, even possible sexual context then yes I believe it is art and can be beautiful.

Porno? No. There can be nudes that are considered art, but I would compare porn to more of a product than an art. There's no easy answer to this, and there's going to be a lot of different views.

Here's how I'd compare it: go to Target and look in the kitchen section. There's some coffee makers or mixers of microwaves that are beautifully designed, but I don't consider them art. Although yes, there is a certain element of artistry in items like this, in the mundane. But when I buy a toaster, I'm going to use it for toasting bread, not hanging up on my wall.

Porn is like that. I don't want to be crude, but when looking at porn, I'm looking at it for a specific purpose. Yes, there may be an element of artistry in this angle or that one, or this shot follows the rule of thirds or is well lit, but I don't just watch porn and admire what the cinematographer did.

I agrees with tamron. Porno is definitely a product and there is no real art to it. I think that art has to make you appreciate it. There has to be some level of talent to it and i think that anyone can have sex and record it. Amateur porn for example is exactly that. I think that art can presented to the whole family. Kids included and i would not present porn to my kids.

Pornography is too general a term. A lot of things are defined as pornography by some while others see it inherently as art. It's a hard thing to judge without specific examples. The general definition:

Pornography
noun: pornography
1. Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.

Can pornography be art? Absolutely. Is not Michelangelo's 'David' a type of pornographic image? Did it not sexually excite people? It can easily fit into the definition. So, simply put. pornography can be art at times while being something else at others.

True. The only thing that I have a problem with is people telling me that there is no way that pornography can be art, because of the intention when it was filmed. Art does not have to be cultivated with it being art in mind. Anything can be art. Accidental art, but art nevertheless.

Tamron, you are not being crude, and just because you are looking at porn for a specific purpose that doesn't mean that you cannot appreciate the artistic quality of it. I myself watch porn for a specific purpose, but at times I am taken out of that purpose y the art of it all.
