It's a skin color... I don't take pride nor do I take a hatred to it. It is what it is. Its what I was born. Who cares.

Is it ok to be proud of your skin color?

The short answer.... No

Let me explain my point of view on this before you jump me.
I think is ok to be proud of your heritage but not your color. When you say you are proud to be white, it implies that being white is somehow better than being of some other color because you aren't discerning between heritages at that point, just color.
Saying your proud that you are white is like saying you are proud to be tall, this implies that it is better than being short...

So when I hear someone say they are proud to be "white" it makes me wonder if it's because they are glad they are not another color, or if they are trying to say they are proud of their heritage and they weren't just articulate enough with the wording of their statement.

I can't help what other people perceive and think I am 'implying'. But when people automatically assumes that because I am proud to be of german/swedish descent, which makes me a caucasion male, then they have the racial outlook on things, not me.

Who's racist then? Me for saying I'm proud to be caucasion, or them for making up their own assumptions over what they think my implications were?

I'm in no way better than a 25 year old african american male making the kind of money I make, living the kind of life I live. I'll treat him as my equal. I don't give a fuck about skin color, I'm just glad I'm caucasion because I don't have to go through the hardships a lot of african americans did growing up.

But by saying you are proud to be white means nothing. The English are white, Germans are white, the Swedes are white, hundreds of ethnicities are white.... so which one are you exactly proud to be?
Like I said, I completely understand being proud of your heritage, but your skin color?

See now this statement I understand. I know exactly what you are saying and I don't see it coming off as racist at all... But at this point you are saying you are glad that you are white, not proud.

Maybe this is a better point. Being glad you are white because of the differences in the races is different than being proud of being white in my eyes. Saying you are proud denotes an accomplishment, like finishing school in my eyes.

RecklessTim, would you rather be another skin color?

Never thought of it, but now that you ask... No, not really. I'm happy the way I am. There isn't anything that I would want to change, because if I did, I would no longer be me.
But that doesn't mean I am proud of my skin color, there is no pride to be had for something I had no control over.

So say you were given a house in a really, really nice neighborhood... you couldnt say you were proud to live there because you didnt earn it?

... I am german, irish, and hungarian...but I had no control over that... yet I am still proud of it....

I really don't see a difference between being glad and being proud of being caucasion.

I'm proud to be caucasion, I try to represent my race with respect and dignity towards others.

I think it's a matter of how I define pride...

I am a proud father.

But I am glad/happy that I'm tall. I would not want to be a short guy, no way no how... but I can't say that I'm proud to be tall... there is no pride to be had in that... since I had nothing to do with it.
I can be proud of my ass since I don't overeat and it doesn't look like cottage cheese. But with that, I have something to do with it...

See the difference?

I beg to differ. The short answer is yes...IMO.

It simply means you accept you for who you are and take pride in it.

A number of things make up who you are no doubt. Ancestry, nature, accomplishments etc etc. Your skin colour is an intrinsical part of who you are. You can't change that....well, except if you are Michael Jackson :D. Why can't you take pride in that as opposed to wishing you were another colour? Take ownership of who you are regardless of race/skin colour...and be proud of it.

Edit: Forgot about Michael Jackson. Fixed.
