If you both have internet, why not use your computers for free skype or Google+ chat? There are so many free video programs out there and it's much more personal than a phone

I am undecided about the stability of going that route.

if you get android which i recommend
if you can make sure it has the latest android os
also before choosing your phone
check the model number of the type you choose to get the specs you may find the specs
much different than advertised
like for instance the samsung galaxy s has 4 different models
and there is a galaxy s II
dont go to the store and ask the people there cause they are gonna uptalk their models
htc is my favorite brand
get one with led flash hd video
front facing camera newest android os
standard cable connection mini and micro usb
some service providers charge a forture for some extra features that are not included it there so called unlimited plan
if their plans off a fee extra for tethering to use your phone to get on the internet with your computer
some providers that dont mention this you can just tether without having to pay for it
cellular south is the best plans I have found how ever not necessarily the best phones but they are pretty good
dont forget there is the new windows phone also
make sure that the phone is at least android 2.2 no lower
check the version of flash player on it also
i personal hate iphones they cost more for less features
there are more apps for android and more free apps for android period

I have the Droid pro and absolutely love it. If you are not using Itunes... I would not mess with an Iphone. My Droid has both the touch screen and the keyboard as well as being a world phone. For me, it was a perfect middle between the Iphone and a Blackberry that I switched from.

I have used both extensively.

I prefer the iPhone, I think the interface is cleaner and crisper and it's a reliable bit of kit. Fetching from mail servers I also thought was reliable and well integrated.

The android is good, but it's just not quite there, but that's represented in the price.

Oh its there and competes quite nicely with the iPhone. You just have to have the right Android phone. Not all Androids are equal.

I was shopping for a smart phone last night and couldn't believe how freaking expensive plans are now.

Verizon with unlimited calls, unlimited text and a 12GB data plan runs $189.99/month WTF! I can lease a brand new car for that

You aren't kidding. It is ridiculous how much they charge and the fact that we keep shelling out this kind of money to support it. Luckily I was grandfathered in with the unlimited data for 29.99 extra, same as Panacea. I share a plan with my son and we both have unlimited text/data and 700 minutes for 189. Still over priced.

What phone do you have, BB?

Oops, forgot to put that I have a Droid X. I love the screen size and all the functionality. If I could upgrade I would get the Bionic.

I also rooted it so I can use as a mobile hot spot without the extra charge per month, in addition to other things I can do with it. :)

Thanks, I will check that one out, the X2 I guess was the best option I saw

Go to your settings (usually can be found in the ap section if you haven't moved it). Look down the list (usually the third one down) and click onto "sound". After you click onto "sound" click onto "ringtone" (incoming calls). You can also set different sounds to different numbers that call in. I ALWAYS know when my wife is calling LOL
nothing there I see to set sounds to individual callers. I know that is where you set the ring tone but there are no options to edit for different callers

I don't know about yours, but on mine, you do it individually at the contact level. Go to your contacts and edit the contact. There's a choice to choose ringtone there.

I can vouch for the shitty coverage. I had Nextel which then went to Sprint/Nextel. I could literally change my level of coverage just by raising or lowering my phone. Lay on the floor in my bedroom, 1 bar...sit on the bed in my bedroom, 3 bars. I hung on to the shitty service for a long time simply b/c of the Direct Connect feature. Thank God everybody else got rid of it!!! LOL

You can do it under the contact. Click to view the contact. Once the contact opens, click your menu button. Choose options and a screen should come up. The top option will be ringtone and the one below it will be to send that caller straight to voicemail when they call. Voila!!! :)

And I'm a day late and a dollar short, LOL

As for the cost of Verizon plans for smartphones, I also was lucky enough to get the $29.99 unlimited data plan. Also, if you call them and ask them about a family plan for unlimited texts (we have 4 lines on our account) you can have EVERY line get unlimited texts for a total of like $30 instead of the $15 per line that is normal.

Of the 4 lines on our account, 3 have unlimited data. We all have unlimited texts and we share 1400 minutes. You get 10 numbers that you can program for all of their calls to your phone to be free (you can change those numbers as often as you want). We NEVER go over our minutes. Total for all 4 lines is $230.
