In our american government class, we have all talked about the rumors and pretty much got most of the cleared up, but I dont remember what they said about the Muslim part.. i must of zoned out on that one. lol

Is the paper to be limited to Demoncrats and Republicans? Because there are three other "major" parties--I linked to them in the beginning. While their candidates don't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning they can affect the election--many believe that Nadar's running in 2000 cost Gore the election, for example.

could you put in something about how television has impacted the election process. for example i think nixon and JFK had the first televised debate. those who listened felt Nixon came out ahead but those who viewed it felt Nixon lost.

I didnt think of that.. well, I think its done.. i gotta run and pick up the kids from school.. when I come back Ill re-read it and print. Here is the finished project.. let me know what yall think and If i need to change anything please! :)

On November 4, 2008, the nation will be voting on a new President of the United States. This election has been very exciting from both sides of the parties. The Democratic side has Barack Obama running for President and Joe Biden as Vice President. The Republican side has John McCain running for President and Sarah Palin as Vice President. Both Parties are having major world alternating things happening inside them. Obama is the first black man that has a remarkably chance of winning and McCain now has Palin on his ballot and she would be the first woman Vice President. There are several different stances that each party stands for. Here is a look into each.

The Republican Party was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and quickly surpassed the Whig Party as the principle opposition to the Democratic Party. Back when Abraham Lincoln was President, the Republicans presided over the American Civil War and Reconstruction and were harried by internal factions and scandals toward the end of the 19th century. The Republican Party freed the slaves and done a lot of things that the Democrats didn’t want to accept at the time. Now a lot of that has changed. Republicans support the military forces, big businesses and the economy.

The Democrat Party is the oldest political party in continuous operation in the United States of America. The Democratic Party traces its origins to the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists in 1792. In the 1800’s Democrats stood for limited government and the opposition to moralism in politics. They opposed republican projects such as building roads, freeing slaves, and prohibiting sales of alcoholic beverages. Woodrow Wilson caused the party’s economic policies to change. By the end of Franklin Delanor Roosevelt’s reign Democrats stood for positive government action to help the economy. Democrats were referred to as the “common man”.

Republicans and Democrats are two separate groups that are almost opposite on their beliefs. Right now, we have a supposedly Muslim man running for President of the United States for the Democrats. The Constitution was founded on Christian Beliefs. Do you believe that is wrong? Some people believe that a Muslim man can not be in charge of a Christian country. Religion has always played a major role for both parties, however, in the course of a century; the parties' religious compositions have changed. Before the 1960’s, Religion was a major dividing line between the parties with Catholics, Jews, and Southern Protestants heavily Democratic, and Northeastern Protestants heavily Republican. After the New Deal Coalation in the late 1960’s, most of the old differences faded away. In my mind, we shouldn’t all be judged on our religion. We basically need to look for the person that is going to take care of our country no matter skin color or religion.

Healthcare is a big issue with the country right now. A lot of people that need health care can’t get it due to lower income. Per the RNC website, here is what the republican President wants to do:
• The President's plan will help more Americans afford health insurance by reforming the tax code with a standard deduction for health insurance - like the standard deduction for dependants.
• The Affordable Choices Initiative will help make basic private health insurance available and will provide additional help to Americans who cannot afford insurance.
• These two policies will work together to help more Americans afford basic private coverage...
• The President's proposal will lower taxes for millions of Americans who now purchase health insurance on their own, making their insurance more affordable.

John McCain wants to reform Health Care making it easier for individuals and families to obtain insurance also to be able to purchase insurance across state lines. He wants to reform the tax code to give us the choice of which we pick and give us a refund check to offset the differences in insurance costs. This, to me, will cause a dramatic increase in our taxes. Many companies don’t offer insurance for their employees because it will cost too much, if they can help out the business, this may help us a little better. John McCain also wants to make insurance more portable, so that if we leave a job we can take insurance with us. Some companies offer that now, however the cost is outrageous and way too much for people to pay.

In Iowa, Barack Obama spoke about health care. He stated: “We now face an opportunity — and an obligation — to turn the page on the failed politics of yesterday's health care debates… My plan begins by covering every American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don't have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned away because of a preexisting condition or illness.”

Barack Obama’s Plan seems to be more reasonable as far as health care goes. He speaks about how he wants to make health care available to everyone and even if you have a pre-existing condition, you won’t be turned away. He is also going for affordable deductibles and co-pay. He also says, “Individuals and families who do not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP but still need financial assistance will receive an income-related federal subsidy to buy into the new public plan or purchase a private health care plan.”

Out of the two plans, I believe that Obama’s plan is a better and more reasonable plan. The people that can’t afford insurance are the ones of a lower income. Last year, my mother was shot in the head. She lost her eye and the right side of her face is still shattered and broken. She had no insurance when this happened. She has over $200,000 dollars in medical bills and she still needs several more surgeries, however, no place will take her in because she has no insurance. The plastic surgeon supposedly reconstructed her face only to find out a few months ago that her face is still shattered and the eye doctor can’t do anything to her eye socket until that is fixed. She can’t go get it fixed because she has no insurance and can’t get any assistance through the state. She can’t even get disability. With Obama’s plan, my mother would be able to have the surgeries she needs to go on living before the infection in her eye seeps to her brain.

The education plan is something I feel very strong about. In this country, we are seeing some of the lowest scores ever. The drop out rate is tremendously high. We have all the education in the world at our fingertips; we need to have the children understand that. You are more powerful of a person having a stronger knowledge base. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was started originally with the right ideas. However, with inadequate funds and teaching has only held back students and caused more harm. The students are just getting pushed through the system without actually helping them. If there were more teachers that would reach out and help these students, the plan would be wonderful. Barack Obama wants to do this. He wants to reform the No Child Left Behind Act by starting with funding the law. He will improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness for college and the workplace and improve student learning in an individualized manner. Obama is also focusing his efforts on early child hood development. He wants to implement a “Zero to Five” plan that provides support to the young child and parents. The plan places key emphasis at early care and education for infants as well as the pre-kindergarten ages. Barack Obama has a plan to modernize and strengthen our education system by ensuring children have the skills to compete in our economy. Obama will do this even if it means breaching our current tradition in education. They’ll insist on more reform and accountability, increase resources, and recruit an army of new teachers.

John McCain seems to be in agreement with Osama in regards to the No Child Left Behind Act. However, McCain doesn’t seem to go into detail the way that Osama does. McCain says that he wants to educate the teacher more and reward them. He believes our schools can and should compete to be the most innovative, flexible and student-centered - not safe havens for the uninspired and unaccountable. He wants to give student and their parents the choice to change school if that is what they want. He also wants to fund more of the ‘Head Start’ programs. He wants to focus on funding for the children that is most in need of the programs.

Out of the two, Obama has a better Education Plan. It seems he wants to actively fight for our kids and their futures. In my opinion, McCain doesn’t have enough to support his plan. Fixing the No Child Left Behind Act won’t fix the problems we are having in education. We all need to act as Parents and Teachers for our children of the next generation to succeed in life and be better people of the future.

last part (wouldnt let me post all of it at once)

On Barack Obama’s Website, It states: “For every $1.00 earned by a man, the average woman receives only 77 cents, while African American women only get 67 cents and Latinas receive only 57 cents.” This is a scary truth. Obama wants to overturn the Supreme Court's recent ruling that curtails racial minorities' and women's ability to challenge pay discrimination. Obama also wants to pass a Fair Pay Act to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. McCain says, “I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems. This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system”. McCain didn’t show up for the vote of the Fair Pay Restoration Act. Obama and Hilary were both there and voted in favor for it. However, it failed to get the 60 votes in needed.

Obama believes in civil unions that coincide with civil rights, he believes that it will be beneficial in terms of the rights of people to transfer property, to make healthcare decisions and all those civil rights. It should be equal across the states and each state should recognize civil unions of same sex couples. Its up to the individual denomination to make a decision as to weather they want to recognize that marriage or not.

McCain wants to protect marriage. He believes that a marriage is only between a man and a woman. He believes that the roles of a mother and a father are very strong in raising children. He wants to protect these beliefs and make sure the courts do the same.
John McCain wants to nominate judges who understand that the role of the Court is not to subvert the rights of the people by legislating from the bench. He wants to ensure that, where state and local governments do act to preserve the traditional family, the Courts must not overstep their authority and thwart the Constitutional right of the people to decide this question.

The Major parties do have substantial difference, both in their policies and in their constituents. From what I have learned on this, Republicans look out more for the businesses, economy and wealthier people. They do have concerns for the lower income people, but it’s not something they proactively fight for. Democrats look after all groups of people. They want to fight for the all the people of the United States. After reading and researching the information, it has opened up my eyes to whom I am and who I am voting for. The passionate one always wins. So who is more passionate?

kind of hard to truly critique without knowing what the assignment was.

if it was this.............
writing a 2000 word paper that talks about the different parties and their differences
then it would appear you got off track a bit

but then later you said.........
pretty much only between the two because its suppose to lean towards mccain and obama

were you supposed to be an advocate for one side or the other?

or were you supposed to just compare the parties?

Okay, did an edit for you:

November 4, 2008, the nation will got to the polls to elect a new President of the United States. This election has generated a great deal of excitement both from the party faithful and the general electorate. The Democrats are banking on Barack Obama as the next President with Joe Biden as his running mate. The Republicans are putting their faith in John McCain for the nation’s top office and relative newcomer Sarah Palin as the Vice President. Both parties have broken new ground—if Obama is elected, he will be the black President and if McCain wins, Palin would be the first female Vice President.

There are significant differences in the party platforms. Republicans were seen at that time as the party of reform.

The Democrat Party is the oldest political party in continuous operation in the United States. The Party traces its origins to the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists in 1792. In the 1800’s Democrats supported limited government and the opposition to moralism in politics. They opposed republican projects such as building roads, freeing slaves, and prohibiting sales of alcoholic beverages. Woodrow Wilson was influential in changing the party’s economic policies. And by the end of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s reign, with numerous and expansive changes in social programs such, Democrats were viewed as the party of the “common man”.

Republicans and Democrats are presently diametrically opposed in many significant political ideologies. Republicans believe less government with emphasis on states rights, anti-abortion, and pro-business. Democrats believe in more federal government control with less emphasis on states rights, support abortion, viewed as sympathetic to worker’s rights. Religion has always played a major role for both parties, however, in the course of a century; the parties' platforms on religion have changed significantly. Before the 1960’s, religion was a major dividing line between the parties with Catholics, Jews, and Southern Protestants heavily Democrat, and Northeastern Protestants heavily Republican. After the New Deal Coalition in the late 1960’s, most of these differences faded away. In my mind, we should all have an open mind when it comes to religion and look for the person that is going to lead out country as caring about all of our citizen’s right no matter the skin color, national origin, or religious affiliation.

Healthcare is a another significant issue affecting all Americans. Many of our country’s citizens do not have health care insurance. The Republicans solution to this problem as state in the RNC website is as follows:

• The President's plan will help more Americans afford health insurance by reforming the tax code with a standard deduction for health insurance - like the standard deduction for dependants.

• The Affordable Choices Initiative will help make basic private health insurance available and will provide additional help to Americans who cannot afford insurance.

• These two policies will work together to help more Americans afford basic private coverage...

• The President's proposal will lower taxes for millions of Americans who now purchase health insurance on their own, making their insurance more affordable.

John McCain wants to reform Health Care making it easier for individuals and families to obtain insurance and also to be able to purchase insurance across state lines. He wants to reform the tax code to give us a greater selection of choices in private insurance and issue refunds to offset the differences in insurance costs. The risk in this choice in my mind is that it will cause a dramatic increase in our taxes. Many companies don’t offer insurance for their employees because it costs too much, so I think what we need it to find a way to encourage businesses to offer health insurance for their employees. John McCain also wants to make insurance more portable, so that if we leave a job we can take insurance with us. Some companies offer that now, however the cost is prohibitive and far too much for most people to pay.

In Iowa, Barack Obama recently spoke to an audience about the health care crisis.

Barack Obama’s Plan seems to be more reasonable to me as far as health care is concerned. He speaks about how he wants to make health care available to everyone and even if you have a pre-existing condition, you won’t be turned away. He is also looking for affordable deductibles and co-pay and says, “Individuals and families who do not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP but still need financial assistance will receive an income-related federal subsidy to buy into the new public plan or purchase a private health care plan.”

Out of the two plans, I believe that Obama’s plan is a better and more reasonable. The people that can’t afford insurance are the ones with lower incomes. As an example, last year my mother was the victim of a shooting. She lost her eye and the right side of her face was shattered by the bullet. She had no insurance when this happened. She has over $200,000 dollars in medical bills and she still needs several more surgeries, however, she has no where to go because she has no insurance. The plastic surgeon attempted to reconstruct her face only to find out a few months ago that there is not much he can do about it until her eye socket is repaired. She can’t get it repaired because she has no insurance and cannot get any assistance through the state. She cannot even get disability. With Obama’s plan, my mother would be able to have the surgeries she needs to go on living before the infection in her eye become worse.

The education plan of each party is something I feel very strongly about because I have two children myself. In this country, we are seeing some of the poorest scores on standardized tests in our nation’s history and as comparted to other industrialized countries. The drop out rate is too high. We have the resources to make education a priority but we need to somehow translate that into effective education of our children. Knowledge is power and our nation will improve the more educated our citizens become.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was started originally with the right idea in mind. However, some see it as inadequately funded. The students are getting pushed through the system without it actually helping them. If there were more teachers that would reach out and help these students, the plan would be successful. Barack Obama wants to reform the No Child Left Behind Act by starting with more funding. He will improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness for college and the workplace and improve student learning in an individualized manner. Obama is also focusing his efforts on early child hood development. He wants to implement a “Zero to Five” plan that provides support to the young child and parents. Couldn't fit it all in one so see next post for the rest.

Here is the rest:

John McCain seems to be in agreement with Osama in regards to the No Child Left Behind Act. However, McCain doesn’t seem to have as much detail to his plan as Osama does. Fixing the No Child Left Behind Act won’t fix the problems we are having in education. We all need to act as Parents and Teachers for our children of the next generation to succeed in life and be better people of the future.

The fundamental difference between the two parties when it comes to education is that Democrats support the teachers unions and continued public education and are opposed to school vouchers. Republicans believe support school vouchers and believe that parents should have a choice in where they send their children to school (i.e., private vs. public education).

I added that last paragraph. I think you spent a little too much time talking about too much specifics on healthcare and education. Do they want you to decide issues you agree with like healthcare and education? If not, you should just explain the two party's philosophical positions on healthcare and education rather than the specific plans of the candidates.

Also, I need to educate you V on some of this education stuff. You are falling for the Democrats "give us more of you money" routine. You want to improve education, give parents a choice to send their kids to a private school instead of public school. We spend more money already on education then any other industrialized nation, yet our children have the lowest score--the reason is because the public schools have a monopoly on education--the unions have too much money going to middle managers and administration and not enough to students. Only way to change that is give them some competition to force them to change. No extra money, just a lot better results. ;)

Ok, then you should take out your opinions and compare to the two--the pros and cons--each one is going to have a pro and a con as oppossed to which one you like better. Just go down each party's position on major issues:

-Government (Republicans favor states rights, Dems federal rights)
-Business (Republicans are pro-business, Dems pro-union).
-Religion (Republicans are far more tolerant of religious view; Democrats want complete separation of religion from government).
-Healthcare (Both want reform--Republicans want tax incentives to defray costs, Democrats want national healthcare)
-Abortion - Republicans pro, Democrats con
-Supreme Court - Republicans want judges that give due deference to legilsators, Dems want pro-active judges)
-Civil Rights - Republicans favor equality regardless of sex, race, etc, Democrats favor affirmative action)
-Defense - Republicans are more pro-military, Democrats want to cut the Defense budget

That's a general overview of major issues. I woud focus on the issues and less on your POV.
