Changing "wide scale offenses" is hard. Righting a small wrong is easy.

BIG +1

Added the fact, to some U.S citizens, the flag actually represents something. The illustrious governor of Jersey is doing no better IMO than people who fly flags half torn or at night with no light on them. Then again, most have no clue, so I can see why some really wouldn't care.

I guess the only person with the real gripe is the poor slob who has to go through the extra steps of raising the flag only to lower it back down to half mast.

Lol exactly
If it bothers people so much, I advise they strap some flags to their heads full mast and walk around...should cancel it out :24:

Whitney Houston is ridiculous in my book.

Hey, I'm an old Bruce Springsteen fan, but I wouldn't even lower the flag for him or any other celebrity from Jersey.

I'm with you, it should never be, it's totally retarded.

I know that this seems grossly insensitive, but we don't fly the flag at half staff for any other crack heads. Why are we starting now?

i agree with the OP
we have to fight to get it lowered for a service member who has lost their life fighting for this country, but a drug addicted superstar gets is.........

I agree with all of you. I don't think her contribution to the world warrants the lowering of the flag.

I've always been of the opinion this should be reserved for those who served the country..

And not in the way entertainers do..

By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff.

Anyone see anything in here regarding washed up crack smoking singers? I don't.

It doesn't really have an effect on me in either direction. But I do find it funny how human nature seems to dictate we get really riled up about small-scale offenses (like this) and provide a cricket response when faced with really wide scale offenses (like...well, fuck any of the serious atrocities going on in the world).

A detective friend of mine posted this on his Facebook today:

[h=6]So they fly the flag at half-staff for Whitney Houston, but lets see if anyone does anything for the Detective that was killed in the line of duty today in Florida while serving a search warrant.[/h]

This makes some sense since she's from New Jersey. They're supporting a local legend I suppose.

I generally agree with everyone else, lowering the flag for celebrities is dumb.

this might be offensive to some - not my intention

We pay too much attention to flags in general, we equate patriotism with them and I think panacea alluded to this earlier
we will rally agianst "mis-use" of a flag but pay little heed to other more serious issues that patriots truly should be angry about

PJ nailed it. We spaz out over minutiae as the real issues we should be concerned about swarm all around us.

As an old manager I worked for back in Macon Ga. once said about our upper management:

"They are worrying about pissants while elephants are running them over".

now if i were really cynical i would add that maybe this is why govts encourage flag "worship" - it can be really distracting
