It's a beautiful looking bird. From the tip of it's tail to the top of the head has to be around 12" or so. maybe more. Very bright red and jet black. My shot doesn't do it justice.
They only seem to drill their holes in dead stumps. Many times during the day I can hear them pounding away on one. When it comes to live trees they just peck around for fucking bugs.
