i donno if anyone here knows electricity pretty well, but if you do i have some questions for ya!!
Any decent electrician will tell you to hire a qualified tradesman. You dont fuck around with electricity if you dont know what you're doing.
I have 2 exes that were sparkies, and a FIL who was an electrical engineer.
I'll forward your question to him. Unfortunately, you may not get a response until tomorrow, as it's 1:00 AM here and he's in bed now. Sorry about that...

First off, you're dealing with Alternating current. Both wires are "hot". The current flows one way, then the other. Switches direction 60 times per second, thus, "60 cycle". Your white wire is "neutral" and the black is "hot". The green wire is "ground" which means that if you get a short circuit somewhere, the electricity flows from the shorted component and directs it through the green wire to ground it to the breaker box which is grounded to the............. ground! Literally!
You've got capacitors, which hold a badass charge, will blow your mind if you contact the tabs on 'em. Wiring stuff, like this, up takes more knowledge than I have. The reason for my post is to make you aware of what you're attempting to work with. Good luck!
