It was pretty obvious they were usually just doing it to get even change back.

If my bill came out to $7.13, unless I want a .75 newspaper that I had to buy outside on the rack, I'd much rather just give the cashier $12.13 and get a $5 bill back instead of getting the loose bills and change back (I'm learning that is an interesting and sometimes frustrating concept to a 6 year old you're teaching math to LOL).

That said, I'm not that big of a dick to wait until the cashier drawer is closed, added the fact that I could end up getting a BIG blank stare if I did wait.

Perhaps that is just me though, because during my very short stint working fast food, I gave up asking people if they had extra change so I could just give them bills back. That was the nice thing about my other short stint working retail, people usually paid by credit card LOL

On a side note, don't you just HATE the people who have a bill that comes up to $10.12 and then they have the balls to take ALL 12 pennies out of the "give a penny take a penny" slush fund on the side of the register? it says "need a penny take a penny, have a penny give a penny" NOT "hey, wipe me out if you don't have enough".

My local gas and go mart knows if they need change or small bills I can usually help them out. The neighbor that works there has even called me to ask for change on a holiday weekend. Of course those girls make me some super subs and pizza.

Ha ha, we didn't have any of those little trays at the registers. You know what did annoy me though? Everyone cleaning out the drawer because they want me to break a $100. And getting change from the managers was a huge pain in the ass.

having worked at a grocery store, i can say that being given change AFTER the drawer was closed was a HUGE PITA. not because of the math part, but because you had to write down why you had to open your drawer during a non sale. and after so many opens (i think it was 3), you needed a manager to override and open it for you

I have come into a steady supply of brand new two dollar bills...

You should see the reactions I get from cashiers when I try to pay with them.
First they can't count them properly, I guess people can't count by two's
Then they open their drawer and just stare, I guess they are thinking, "I don't have a spot to put these"

I've actually had a few people tell me they can't take them.

Last week-end I was at a bar with the wife in NYC and our drinks were $20, so I handed her 10 two dollar bills, throwing two more on the bar for tip. She looked at them and threw them back to me and said they won't take them. So I handed her a 20 dollar bill. Just before I walked away from the bar I scooped up the two's I left for her tip and said, "Oh yeah, you can't accept these" and walked away.

The funniest thing is when people get all excited and say they collect them. I have had people buy them off of me....

Like most things which are uncommon I have a few. $2 bills are not seen around here much like $1 coins.

Oh weird :p we don't see anything below a five pound note here. I hear rumours of one pound notes, but I've never actually observed one.

well, in a cashiers till, there isnt anywhere to put a $2 bill!! there's a slot for 1s, 5s, 10s, 20s, and the 100s usually go under all the 20s or under the till itself in a special pocket with all the checks. same with 50s

its true, you dont see $2 bills much. they're there, but its a bill people forget about. working at a grocery store for 2 1/2 years, i can count on one hand how many times a $2bill came across my register and still have fingers left over! and thats including working in the courtesy booth too!

I used to work at my uncle's Christmas tree farm over winter breaks in high school - they had a shop set up in the barn with ornaments and lights and things on one side, and then I worked in a little stall we had set up for hot chocolate, food, etc. I remember this prissy woman from NYC (she was wearing a white, expensive-looking jacket and high heels - who the hell wears that to cut down a pine tree in the muddy snow, anyway?),,, she got 2 hot chocolates and a pack of cookies - total was like $2.25. She tried to pay with a $100 bill... I just looked at her for a second before I walked over to the cash register we used for the Christmas trees to break it. It was so stupid - nothing in the food stand sold for more than $5 - our register probably had $50 tops in it.

You should have given her change in one dollar bills. And if she complained asking if you have anything larger, you should have asked her if she had anything smaller... :D
